Hi I barley know anything about 3 gun competitions. I've seen videos and read articles but mostly from the statea

I have a np22 9mm norinco and a xcr-l but no shotgun yet lol. What would be a good gun to get.? I eventually want to upgrade my handgun but I haven't found a place in central alberta (I'm from red deer) to try it out. I saw that I need slings and holsters. How many mags should you have for your rifle? And how many mags for handgun? Abd for shotgun?

I'm a newb and I hope someone could maybe hook me up with a website or video or article.

I have a Vortex 1-4 crossfire for my xcr . Also have a burris 3x 332 . And a redfield counterstrike which is better just do try?

I'm just looking for any starter / beginner info without being bashed.

Thanks

Your pistol and rifle are fine. A good holster is a necessity but slings will depend on where you shoot. We don't use slings in the Peace Country. The 1-4 scope would be my preference over the fixed 3x.

You should be able to carry at least 30-40 rounds for your pistol and rifle, and at least 30 for your shotgun. You don't need fancy gear for that, though it helps. A shoulder bag or dump pouch, or your pockets will work.

For the shotgun, do you want a pump or semi? What's your budget?

Ummm thinking under 500 to start. Thinking pump because of price . 30 rounds for shotgun eh thats alot to reload lol cant wait sounds fun thanks for info. What do you run?

We've actually had as many as 35 rounds in a shotgun only stage. Doing well with your shotgun is all about the reloading.

I use a Remington VersaMax.

With a $500 budget I'd get an 870 or used Benelli Nova and a +7 (or more) extension. Capacity is king.

Make sure your holster is very secure. More secure than you would ever need for IPSC or IDPA matches.

Either a holster with some type of retention system, or just very tight fitting.

You'll be going prone with your rifle, flipping your shotgun around to load it, moving around barricades, etc. all with a loaded handgun in your holster.

Make sure it stays in the holster.

On EE right now numourus Benelli super nova Tacticals for $600(great gun and normally $1000 almost bought one for 3 gun but went with the UTS 15 instead.

Really??? I've only been shooting 3G for 4 years (mostly US matches) and I've never seen this.

IMO the Super Nova Tactical is not a great choice for 3 gun as it's not threaded for chokes and the short barrel is pointless with a large extension.

The UTS has great capacity to start a stage with but is a miserable beast to reload on the clock.

Often chokes aren't needed, but I'd say a good idea to have since the design of the stage can be whatever people want it to be.

I shoot 3G mainly with a cylinder choke. Rarely do you shoot a target further than 20y, except slugs. My 24g (7/8 oz) target loads take down all the steel just fine.

I run:

STI 1911 45cal
Stag 3G AR w/ Vortex 1-4 PST
1301 Comp with tube extension.

Are there better choices? Sure, but I have fun and it's what I have. 9mm is better for speed, cost, etc.

For your first event, try seeing if somebody would borrow you gear/mags, etc. Often people are willing to help out since the gear requirement is very steep for new shooters.

I can carry 16 rounds shotgun in two 4x4's. If the stage requires more I use a drop pouch.
I have 3 - 10 rd rifle mags, have more if needed in pockets.
I have 4 - 8rd pistol mags, and have more if needed in pockets.

Being able to adapt is key. Most people carry way more crap than they need. Vests are not recommended.

For stages where mags can't be dropped, I use the drop pouch for someplace to store them. Serves dual purpose.

You've never shot your rifle prone, and then stand up and draw your handgun?

Are you sure you were shooting 3-gun?

Most matches do not allow a loaded hot handgun to be in the holster while shooter is prone. If prone is either required or optional, the handgun will be empty chamber.

Condition 2 is still a loaded handgun.

And it's still a DQ if your gun falls out of the holster.

Wow lots of good info thanks. What is a good barrell length for shotgun? Are those mag fed shogun good? Like what kind of range are the targets out for shotgun? And what choke?

"Good barrel length" is one of those "it depends" questions.

Extra length adds velocity so it hits harder on steel. If you run a long mag extension then there's no "mobility" penalty for having a long barrel on top of it.

Not long ago the 18" cyl. bore 870 with a +2 was pretty much standard. Now lots of the guys are running 24"+ barrels and extensions that go past the end. My boy was running a 26" 870 with a +7 until he stepped up to a VersaMax.

Most of our locals with chokes are using Mod or Light Mod for all around use. We've shot out to 100m with slugs, most steel and clays are inside 30m.

I've not seen the mag fed guns run that well, YMMV.

Ya. I guess eh what I read for mag fed guns is they do not run well. But th e idea is cool and you think with them mags it would help... I hope one comes up without Jams et one day

My recommendation would be, if you are trying to do a 3gun shotgun on a budget look at the Stoeger M3K. I feel its a better option at $800 than any pump at $500.

If you can see yourself some day going to a semi shotgun, then any time and money spent training with a pump is only half useful.

How reliable is the m3k stoger? I was at a sporting clay club and guys were saying in tournaments . The semis are the ones that have the most issues. Of course this is completely different. And this may be a newb question. But to shoot slugs... do you need a slug choke or can you use full choke?

The stoeger looks pretty nice, and affordable. It's a benelli inertia action. I hear mixed reviews on the inertia action with light target loads; heavy loads are very reliable in inertia actions. I would avoid the hatsan and etc shotguns; not looking to start a war if your hatsan runs excellently, I just have seen hatsan's have problems. And on that note, same with some pump actions. Shotgun's can be a pain in the arse, but they are the most fun gun to shoot in 3 gun, imo.

If you are going to skimp, get an 870 or 590 pump. Some people say that chokes aren't necessary but I think that they are. Some steel is very stubborn and will not fall. The tighter your pattern, the higher the chance that steel will fall. I keep a full compliment of chokes on hand, but mostly run improved cylinder.

And you can shoot slugs through a turkey choke if you want. Most slugs have 'rifling' on them. The rifling is not to spin the projectile as some may say, but the rifling is so the slug can squeeze (swage) through any choke. You do not need a rifled choke to shoot slugs. You need a rifled barrel to shoot sabot slugs. A rifled choke, I think, would be no good at all for 3 gun because your lead shot will get all beat up going through the choke and doing so would deform the shot and the rifled choke. That said, I do not have any direct experience with rifled chokes so I could be way out in left field. I'd stick to the conventional chokes, IC, M, F and etc.
