Hey all,

I've been on the board for a little while and am fitted to go thanks to the equipment exchange. But as I head out this season as a first time hunter, I am looking for some advice and tips that'll make things a little easier and to gleen as much wisdom from y'all as I can.

Thanks in advance.

Keep a 3 piece takedown cleaning rod in your pack. You never now when you may have to clear your rifle bore.

Put at least 20 rounds through your rifle with the.ammo that you are going to use so that you know that it's sighted in where you want it. I've seen guys sight in with surplus FMJ and then wonder why they missed using their factory hunting ammo.

Carry TWO knives with you, and a compass. Batteries die on a GPS

Walk slowly, pausing often to look around you, paying attention to watch your back trail often as sometimes a buck will lay down and let you walk by him, then get up and walk out to where you had just passed by. Often times, looking behind me while still hunting, a buck will be standing on my back trail watching me.

Bring TP
Cover your muzzle in electrical tape, it will keep crap out and won't harm accuracy
Keep a knife sharpener with you
Walk slowly. I mean really slow. Once you think you are going slow, cut your speed in half again.

Know your equipment! Recon the area you are going to be hunting (if possible) and do your best to hunt with the wind in your face.

Hmmm.. You are going out by yourself, with indeterminate experience in the woods. Its really easy to get lost, or hurt, or actually shoot something that weighs more than you. You need to address all of these issues in advance before you head out.
I'm sure you were expecting actual deer hunting tips, just bear in mind that deer hunting can put you at much more risk than, say, small game hunting. Its serious stuff, if you consider yourself an earnest hunter...

As it was mentioned, play the wind and walk slowly....don't take more than 3 steps at one time.........with every step (in the bush) your view changes.....you want to spot them before they spot you and the only way to do that, is to move slow and quietly....

Look for the parts of the animal, movement from the tail, ear, legs, white patch, backbone something because most times.....if they are not moving, they are hard to spot.....Can you find the nice 8 pointer?

This the second time I'm looking at that photo. First the you posted it I found the deer in 10 seconds... It just took me 10 minutes to find it again. :/
