SVT-40 to SVD Dragunov Build

I could always mill it down, like the CZ 858, if it seems too heavy. For a Drag I'd want it a bit on the heavy side anyway.

I just can't stop to watch your rifle...

I'm really interested to make one this winter...

How about one-piece billet aluminium *receiver* ???
Strong but lightweight !!!

I'm mostly worried to have hard times finding all the stock trims, original wood parts and having problems getting some dimensions out of a real dragunov...

Today I received my first SVD part...
Not in bad shape, just need a good disassembly / cleaning / oiling...

Sourcing the pieces is by far the most 'challenging' part. You think there'd be more out there but with the US block on on Soviet/Chinese hardware the pieces are hard to come by. Especially if you don't speak Russian or Ukranian;)

The mag you found, while it may work, is not from an SVD though. It's looks to be from a Romainian PSL (an AK based SVD like-ish rifle).

The mag mod is one of the more challenging. If the SVD and PSL mags have similiar dimensions I have a few tips that may help... get access to a TIG. You'll need to modify the feed lips, the mag width will need to be narrowed, along with mods to the follower (width and feed angle), and mods to how the mag locks into position (both the nose and rear locking 'nubs'). A great fawking PITA. And don't forget to restrict it to 5 rounds to keep it all nice and legal for Mr. Harper:p

Yep its a PSL mag...
I just hope its a 7.62x54r mag... :p

Yeah I will have to pin the mag but since I have no rifle to use it, i don't think its a problem... Mr. Harper, don't worry, I will pin it !!! :D

I know a russian guy who lives here in Canada, maybe he can help me find some pieces... I hope !!!

For me I found the majority came out of former Soviet-Blok countries like the Ukraine and Poland. Not much out of Russia itself.

Rumour has it that Iraq and Libya have a few pieces scattered around here and there:D

Was looking at an SVT yesterday and thought to myself, hey i could see this transforming into an SVD much like some people do with their VZ's to VSS's. I'm on the VSS train first though but an SVD will almost surely follow!

I am by no means trying to say anything negative or counterproductive..rather just asking.
Wouldn't this be illegal as the dragunov is mentioned by name in the "prohibited" section.
Hopefully someone alot smarter than me can answer this.
On another note .neat :) can't wait to see it!!

It's not an actual dragunov, he made it from an SVT. People do the same with CZs and Valmets to AKs and the like. Not unheard of.

While many guns were banned simply on looks, it is not illegal to make a legal gun look like an illegal gun.

It drives the anti nuts too. Which is an added bonus.

Which is very funny as that was the whole initial reasoning for the restricted/prohibited classifications! If the internals/functioning was the same as the original, then they could effectively ban it! You could dress up anything to look like anything on the banned list if it started as a non-restricted first! Now, it seems that they don't like that anymore and have switched to "if it looks like one and could be mistaken by cops as one, then it is banned/restricted". Look at all the 10/22 kits and look alikes out there! They didn't care up until now and it is probably because of the election coming up that has made them go to their A Game and brought out their wish list of bans to start imposing to stir up #### just before the election to either get their way, or make the CPC look like lunatics for allowing these "On the streets for anyone to be able to buy!"

Just look at the Blaze 47 crap and it is exactly where they start to go with the "variant=look-alike" definition from now on!

They suck and a house cleaning is in order if the CPC can pull through this election!

So I finally found an SVD front sight/muzzle brake, one of the last pieces I was missing, on fleabay... for $410 US. Holy frack! Supply and demand I know but sweet jesus $550 Cdn! Was actually considering it but it lasted about 10 minutes before it sold lol. The search continues...

Yikes! yeah supply and demand for sure, i am interested in your build as i have a "project" svt kicking around. It might stay that way with those prices lol!

Yes... this is an old thread, but certainly a good one. I actually just came across it with Google.

This project is simply amazing. I'm glad I found this, it is indeed quite impressive...

Any updates? (and any new photos? :) )

Cheers
