1911 in 9mm recommendations?

The 9mm Trojans are apparently great but it is a $340 premium over the 45 version, putting it close to 2k. As nice as they might be, would hard for me to drop 2k on a Trojan. I would pay 500 more and get the STI range master, or go for something in the 1-1500 range like the Colt

A lot of us tried the three dot thing and then blacked out the dots on the rear sight. Too many dots make that all important first sight picture as the gun comes up too "busy" to work well. And in fact that is where fiber optic sights just rock. The blacked out notch becomes very easy to differentiate from the front post with the glowing red or green dot that achieving a solid sight picture quickly is aided.

If you truly don't want fiber front sights then often just using a bright red or orange paint on a regular black sight can help. Or if you shoot from covered areas where the sun can't shine on the top of the gun then none of it matters and you might as well go with plain black sights because that's what ALL of them look like.

There are any number of fine 9mm 1911's out there. On the budget end I'd suggest SAM. But if you want one that got a bit more massaging so it has a nicer trigger right out of the case then step it up to STI and their Trojan or Ranger II. From there the sky is the limit. A top notch gun that is still fairly budget minded is a Dan Wesson 1911. Fully tuned but still fairly affordable.

If you don't mind the external extractor the S&W 1911 is available in a 9mm version and has a fit and finish that is very nice for the price.

I've heard about too many issues with Kimber to suggest them. Besides I'm not a fan of their "dusted" finish or whatever it is they do. I like mat finishes or shiny. The blasted texture Kimber uses seems like it would hold powder fouling and be harder to clean easily.

If you liked the feel of an all metal pistol you might also see if you can find and heft a CZ. I agree with how you feel on the 1911 and that you should get one. But a CZ might be a good companion for the 1911 by matching how it feels for you.

Turkish made firearms have some positive feedback on them.
 
Another vote for STI. I have a STI Trojan & Ranger, both in 9mm :).
Love a 45 but ammo is too pricey to shoot on a regular bases. Possible downside for some, the finish on the STI's is not very durable. Shows holster wear quickly.
 
I would go Trojan at the $1,100 mark but any higher and I would be looking elsewhere. Girsan makes a 1911 and if you can find one at a decent price I would be all over it like a dirty shirt. The Turks make great guns eg CZ Shotguns, and their Beretta clones are just two examples.
