3 Gun AR optic question

I have been running an Aimpoint Pro on my AR for the last few seasons and, absolutely love the speed, durability and ease of use.
Most of the my 3 gunning has been in bays of 100m or less. This has allowed me to run the Pro with no downside. Inside 100m, its very accurate.
However, as I begin to travel a little more for 3 gun matches, some of the ranges have longer bays out to 300m.

The question....

I am thinking of just adding a Vortex 3x magnifier to my set up, (having never used a magnifier on a red dot before) would this set up be suitable out to 300m?

OR

Would I just be better off getting a true 1-4 scope? (if you say yes, please explain)

Please keep in mind that the vast majority of stages are going to be under 100m in length and it will only be a few stages out to 2-300m once or twice a year.

And, no, traveling to the States to compete with 4-600 stages is not a factor at this time.

I don't like magnifiers personally. Not a fan of just having the dot to use for hold overs.

I've used various 1-4x's and this year got a couple of Millett DMS-2 1-6x's that have worked well for me.
 
I don't like magnifiers either. Going out to 300m, a magnifier just blows your dot up to a point that it covers your entire target which really doesn't help your accuracy at that range.
Either go with the 1-4x like you wanted. Just make sure it has a red dot, like the Bushnell. Or go with a RDS, like the Aimpoint without magnification. At 300m, accuracy will be an issue. I use a T-1 without mag but only out to 200m.
I don't use a scope as I don't want to be locked into a fixed eye relief.
 
Get a Vortex strike eagle hard to go wrong. I made a move for the same reasons and pretty happy with it. Don't think I would buy an aimpoint again in hindsight. Aero lightweight mount is a great pairing.
 
Bushnell AR Optics 1-4.....nice and easy first focal plane so no calculations needed and if you get the illuminated then it can be used as a red dot.
 
I have been using a Vortex PST 1-4x24 which I like however I have shot a couple of matches where clay pigeons were placed at 100 to 125m. My rounds (American Eagle 55gr FMJ)were going through the pigeons without shattering them. I was not unable to see the hole in the pigeon at 4x. One other shooter had a 5x scope and couple 6x and that was enough to confirm if the pigeon was hit or not. I am hope to upgrade to a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x just to have that extra bit of magnification.

Clay pigeons are a bad rifle target for that very reason. We stopped using them for rifles years ago.
 
Burris has a new 1-8 FFP, illuminated scope coming out that's supposed to be outstanding and way less than what the Vortex Razor HD sells for.

For even less money, a sponsor was advertising a Primary Arms 1-8 for less than $600 recently (this wasn't the Platinum model though).
 
Decisions, decisions.... looking at the Strike Eagle, Millet DMS -2 and Bushnell AR.

Buy once, cry once. Is one significantly better than the others? Why?
 
What is typical for a 300m target you are faced with? I would just dial the intensity of the Aimpoint down and hold over.
 
What size is your dot? 2 moa? At 300m your dot covers 6 inches of the target. But otherwise, I ran a RDS with a magnifier. Works great. Since you have a dot already, a vortex magnifier is not much more. The strike eagle is good, but I find it to be a very busy reticle. I like the trijicon 1-6x with the mildot reticle. Great scope.
 
I envy those who shoot irons for three reasons.

1. They can shoot irons.
2. They don't need to decide on optics.
3. They can shoot irons.

What do you use now to replace the frangible targets? I like the ability to use smaller targets to provide an accuracy challenge.

The Strike Eagles are OK but the glass is mediocre and 6X will not allow you to see bullet holes in Clays at 100. I actually like the reticle on the Strike Eagle since it provides hold-over points for virtually any scenario that I have needed.
 
I have been happy with the vortex PST 1-4

I do have the vortex multiplier and I am not happy with it. Eye relief on it sucks.
