curious who likes this caliber? been thinking of one in a cz lux for some time, just hadn't the need since i have a .405 already. always the fact that you can get good power and not so much recoil out of a medium bore. .405 really wallops on both ends.

It'll do the job for anything in Canada and then some. Still legal i think in 3 African countries for dangerous game. From what I have read it is on the heals-ish of a 375 H&h and ballistically the same to a 9.3×74. it was a good compromise for German African settlers who needed a cheap cartridge for dangerous game that wasn't a military caliber, and wasn't as costly as the high-end calibers and guns traditionally used. It was a nice choice because it fits in standard length Mauser actions which were plentiful at the time. I personally own a Husqvarna in that caliber and it is a heavy hitter. You're basically looking at a rough European .338 win mag equivalent.

Hope it gives you some idea!

Dan.

I like the 9.3 caliber but have the ballistic-equivalent 9.3x74R in a Ruger No.1-S. Fires a 286gr bullet at ~2400 fps. In comparison, the 35 Whelen and 350 Remington Magnum fire 250gr bullets at around that speed.

It is a fine, well balanced cartridge... but around these (CGN) parts, it has attained a somewhat mythical mystique... prepare for a love fest... just keep in mind that it is a brass case of certain volume, spitting a chunk of lead of certain weight... it's bullets contain neither explosives nor star dust nor The Hammer of Thor... you will still have to point a barrel and squeeze a trigger.

Obviously you've been purchasing the wrong bullets.;)

Seriously though, more than one professional hunter has observed that the reaction of African big game to being shot with either a 9.3X62, or a .375 H&H is indistinguishable. The significance of this is that 9.3 rifles tend to be lighter and produce less recoil, and while I don't believe there is such thing as a ballistic free lunch, the 9.3 provides the illusion that there might be.

the 9.3x62 for the adepts are calling it the .366 wagner ... do not ask or you will to wear a pink underwear for a while ....

highly regarded by those that used it and highly ignore by the crowd that never used it or never heard about it ....

some can resume that this caliber is using a 30-06 brass with 286-285 grains bullet around 2400-2500fps.

when i bought my .405 1885 winchester, that very rifle you have was the other one i considered buying as both were at prophet river. very tough decision it was. i like the .405 but the 9.3x74 might have been slightly more sensible. had a .350 and it recoiled WAY less than my .405

anyone know who carries the 550 lux in 9.3? cz usa does not carry it but the european branch does.

Sounds interesting, performance wise almost indistinguishable from a 375 Ruger, no? I'm going for a 270@2600 in mine. Brass from '06 vs belted mag.

True :) Here's my sample, an 'inexpensive' Zastava.

Even with the first couple of batches of reloads, I was more than pleased with the accuracy :d.

Went a step further and ;) had some stickers made up for applying to plastic cartrideg boxes.

I chose the 9.3x74R over the 9.3x62 in the the No.1 rifle - seems better suited with flanged case cartridges.

I think it is on the Heels of the 375H&H and Ruger but both will out preform the 9.3x62. But the 9.3 has the advantage of more comfortable shooting which to a lot of hunters is a huge plus.

Here is a side by side of the 9.3x62 and its little baby cousin the 9mm Para. the 9.3x62 is very similar to a necked up 30-06 casing with a bit more bulge around the neck.

I'm currently playing with an old 9.3X62 Mauser having had a couple others and it's an excellent cartridge, lends itself to being easy to hand load for those that do and components are more easily available every day.
A touch less performance than the the 375 family it is still a very hard hitting round easily capable of handling anything we will encounter and then some.

I got a Zastava recently in the 9.3x62 and because I am a cheap bugger I fire formed all my brass from 30-06 brass which I have enough of to support my grandchildren for their lifetime. I went with the .286 grain nosher Partition and Reloader 15. Just got to get the scope on her and go out and play. I think that all those wildcats on the 30-06 case are cool: 6.5-06, .338-06, .35 Whelen, etc. Realistically the 9.3x62 is a 250 yard gun for most big game and that is within the range that I have shot most of my moose anyways. I use my .30-.378 for sitting on the fence line hidden away at last call overlooking the hayfield.

It's starting to look like that range of cartridge power or family is more than adequately represented in my gun safe.
- .358 Norma Magnum
- .366 Wagner
- 375 Chatfield Taylor
- 375 H&H.
In reality, most have only been acquired in the past couple of years. Now, gotta' make more of an effort to get them some 'exercise' in the field.

Very nice rifle and uniquely named round - 366 Wagner! I have Zastava Fullstock Carbines in 275 Rigby and 416 Remington Magnum -

You can get the recoil up there to "unpleasant" category....285gr at 2400 is noticeable. 2500+ and it starts getting less fun. Getting up there around 35ft/lbs of recoil in a light '98 action will wake you up.
Still haven't got out with the franken Mauser (DUV receiver, FN parts, Shaw 26" barrel, Hogue stock) but I suspect it will be a bit more pleasant then the rechambered HVA half stock Andy rechambered from 9.3x57 and hooked me up with. BTW that's probably the cheapest way to get into a 9.3x62, grab an HVA 9.3x57 and have it reamed. Helps when you know someone with a reamer ;)

:) Looks good. I like the full stock models but I try to limit the ones I pick up to those in what I typify as matching European calibres. They are a little lacking in finish and smoothness but good bang for the buck in my estimation. I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy I experienced with the .366 Wagner, so much so that I picked up another in 7x57mm.
