How Many Magazines?

So I'm currently waiting on the transfer to go through on a Glock 22. So what else would I do while I wait, but buy some parts for it of course. It comes with 3, and I know for IPSC they say you need at least 4, but what's the general consensus around these parts?

How many mags do you have for your pistols and why?

At my first ipsc event, I only had the 5 that came with the pistol.... I found that was sufficient.
(i may have had a stage or two where I have run out of rounds, but that is a result of not taking my time when aiming)
I have added 2 more and a magnet on my belt (4 pouches, one magnet) ...just as a buffer in the event a magazine or two goes bad/breaks

also, some competitors will keep a magazine in their pocket to strip rounds off of in order to start with 10+1

cheers!

Depends on the gun and purpose really.

Bolt guns - minimum 2-3.
Semi rifle - minimum 5-10
Pistol - 8-12. They tend to be dropped and banged uplease more than rifle mags in my experience. Spares are a great idea.

8-16 depending on which pistol, I have over 30 for my AR. Just not crazy about reloading as much when I am at the range.

IDPA needs 3 minimum. And four if it's something like a single stack 1911 that only holds 7 per mag.

Locally we have two clubs now that host a similar sort of "Speed Steel" event. At each stage the shooter does 6 passes at the 5 targets making up any misses as they go. The worst is a throw out time. So those that like this event tend to have 6 or more magazines for the guns they enjoy using in these matches. Less is OK as we'll get folks to reload for them but those with only 2 or 3 quickly find it frustrating and buy at least two more even if they don't buy enough to have 6.

With a GSG 1911 22 I started with 2 mags went to four and then to 6 after I found that the speed loader was not that great and cost the same as 1.5 mags. 60 rounds lets me do 2 stands with a total of 4 paper targets and then enough for 10 or so clays to make things interesting. I enjoy shooting outdoors and don't mind a break after 60 rounds. I usually go 300 rounds on pistol and then switch to rifle with fixed magazine and stripper clips.

Minimum for IPSC would be 5, but I run with 6. Sometimes you have mag issues and on occasion some stage designs require you to place your mags on barrels or tables throughout the COF. I like to error on the safe side. 6 on my belt and 10 more in my range bag.

At least 5. It's not so much how many rounds you need - but how many reloads for efficiency. Add a sixth for a Barney mag.

Same for me...5 mag pouches, 1 Barney. But I also have 2 spares for less than ideal conditions during IPSC matches (rain, mud, snow, etc).
