Type-97: is it really junk?

See in my experience that gun is the Tavor.

The FS2000 on the other hand was just this abomination that was cool to look at but I had no enjoyment out of shooting, only frustration and hatred. I thought the factory T97's were bad, I was wrong. The FS2000 is the worst black rifle I have owned.

Yours still looks cool though, and as a collectors piece I will have one again someday.

Really? I love how the [Scoped model] FS2000 handled when I bought it for my Father's retirement. I even bought an aftermarket ps90-like grip from the US to be more user friendly. With the aftermarket barrel (18.5") it is a hoot.

Yeah, mine is a blast to shoot, it just works.... Though I wish it was select fire.....

The brass ejection always makes me smile.

But either way, to each their own.

I like my T97. Ergos are crap for mag changes and the safety. But it handles nice and is fun to shoot. The operating system is "inspired" by the AK. I had some malfunction issues once while out in the woods. I turned the gas to setting two and it was working again. I found out later a wood chip had wedged right by the feed ramp. Bizarre issue although it was resting among wood chips while I shot other rifles. Either way it still functioned even with crud jammed in it.

I think if keeping it stock it's a cool and fun iron sighted bullpup. If getting heavy into mods then you might want to just get a Tavor. If you use it as it was designed I think it's fun. If you're trying to turn it into something it isn't then either keep the costs down or look for something else already setup the way you want.

One thing I will say though. Given the choice of an iron sighted cz858 and the T97, well I prefer the CZ858. But with the current cost of those along with mine going prohib for a while I wouldn't rule out a T97.

I was in the market for a bullpup - I looked at the T97 FTU. I did some research and some owners had feeding issues where the projectile will get pushed into the case.

Some had no issues some did. The ones that had issues from a YouTube video that I saw, the owner did some feed ramp adjustment. I wasn't willing to do that.
Some owners got some occasional feeding issues and it appears to have resolved after some x # of rounds.

I bit the bullet and got a good deal on a Tavor. I went this with the approach of buy once, cry once. I had to sell some rifles that I no longer use to partially fund the new rifle. You'll have to decide for yourself on what matters most for you.

Depends on what ur definition of "junk" is.... There are people out there who think the SKS is junk, along with every other rifle that cost less than 2 grand. They are probably the same people who use MAC laptops, wear Rolex watches, listen to Beats earmuffs and drive BMW's lol.

For what you pay, the T97 is in a class of its own. It will never be a Tavor. It will never be my choice to compete with nor will it ever be my first choice for a SHTF rifle. The ergos, fit and finish, finicky mag issues are well known. But, heck, if it gets you into shooting and black guns, I say go for it!

This is a fair assessment. OP, if you don't plan on doing a lot aftermarket, or get a good deal on a pre-moded one, your off to a good start. But if you plan to spend money on your rifle upgrading it, your better suited to just save until you can buy a Tar-21or x95 Tavor.

I like mine too. I wanted to keep it kind of stock so I bought the pica tinny rail adapter thing instead of going the ftu route, then slapped a rds on it. Only thing I want to upgrade is the mag release which I'm working on

Been trying to decide on buying one of these too, but I agree leave and enjoy it as stock, or go for a used Tavor. Great reading this thread, some great points, thanks guys. I'll definitely pick up a new one, and hope it's a reliable.

I had one in 2014, then I got a Tavor so I sold it... but the fact is there's a lot to like about the T97 so I bought another one when I got the chance.

They're not junk, that they're designed to be inexpensive to produce does not make them poorly constructed. There is a difference. You're sacrificing ergonomics and modularity, not ruggedness or reliability. The mag release is awkward and the safety is a pain but at the end of the day you can make it work. It's very light, very slim, and having slick, flat, polymer sides means it is extremely comfortable to carry across your back. They can be detail stripped quickly without tools and it's fun to do so! The trigger is light and smooth, but long and with an imperceptible break. Some people don't like that but I find it makes it next to impossible to actually jerk the trigger. I've seen some very good potential for accuracy out of mine.

The biggest downside is the optic mounting options. You can either get a clamp-on rail, which makes it difficult to strip and clean the gas system without removing the rail and losing your zero. Or, you can take a hacksaw to your rifle and install an FTU a few hundred dollars later. Until I see something better, I'm sticking to iron sights. I'd like to see 30mm quick-release rings that clamp directly to the stock rail.

Some polymer mags will be too tight to fit. I found taking a hand file to the magazine well, widening the slot where the "spine" of the magazine goes solves the problem. Widen it only until you can insert and remove the magazine without undue effort. Don't worry about them "dropping free" because you could potentially cause feeding problems if they're too loose and thats not how the manual of arms works with this thing anyway.

Hope you enjoy yours! They're no Tavor but they're good fun!

Most t97s have bad feeding issue and some have over drilled gas port. You have a high rate of buying a new one and having to dump it out at a loss. Some members here got lucky but some are not so much.

There are numerous posts focusing on its issue. I suggest you search CGN and other online forum before buying and you will see a trend on this rifle and the people imported them. Garbage.
If you have $1000 to spare, save up and buy something that works. You do not need to get yourself a $1000 upset.

Had one, had a bunch of ftf, i did not like the idea of rounds getting the bullet push in and jam on the feed ramp with absolutely no protection designe in the firearms if an out of battery detonation was to happen! So I sold it.

The rifle was seemingly poorly redesign to accept ar 15 mags and I think that were the problem lies.

Now I am not going to lie, I saw a special for 750$ or something like that, if I had the money lying around I might just have pick it up. But sometimes I tend to collect rifle that I know I wont shoot and I try to stay away from that.

Not even close to junk....it's a well made rifle that functions, for me anyway, flawlessly. Never had an issue with mine after a couple of thousand rounds. No filing of the mag well or any of that. Right out of the box it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Not a Tavor but does not set you back almost 3K either.
