Looking to pick up an AR before i get home for xmas. Only want to spend up to $1000ish on it as i am unsure if i will like it. Curious what you guys think of the ones i am looking at.

Colt expanse with dust cover and forward assist
DPMS oracle
S&W M&P 15 sport or sport 2(if i could find one)

On a side note, i am not a fan of the fixed front site so is it possible to remove it on the colt or M&P?

the fixed front sight is also your gas block. if you remove it, you need to change the fore end to free floated and get a new gas block.

The OP could cut the FSB and retain the stock handguards, it is not necessary to remove/replace the fsb gas block.

Just curious has anyone had a look at those very affordable Mossberg MMR 20" AR Rifle?

They sure are cheap (only $770 on sale right now from a site sponsor), but perhaps you get what you pay for is true with this one?`

For the price it would be hard to go wrong providing it was reliable.

Regardless from your choices Laker415 I'd probably go with the Smith and learn to live with the front site?

Cheers D

P.S. Perhaps the DPMS Oracle would make a good choice as seen in Caramel's thread here in Black Rifles...

Look into getting a Diamondback AR that comes with a slim keymod handguard and Magpul CTR stock and MOE pistol grip for $1k-ish.

Laker, I've been running a Norc for about 6 years now. It's run in the heat, cold, snow and rain without fail.

For the money they are a really good gun that runs every time. Just take care of it and put lots of ammo through it!

I am sure it runs fine. I just worry about fitment of aftermarket items and would rather spend a little more for something else.

I'd skip the Expanse and look at the OEM-1 for $1100. Yes you need to buy the furniture but you're getting a Colt 6920.

Lots of take off furniture out there for cheap.

This would be my choice over anything else in here (by a long shot).

$150 in Magpul and you've basically got an 6920-MP. Not a bad deal.

I was going to say Windham Weaponry WW-15, but then I looked up the going rate for them... Jeebus, got mine for $700 BNIB just a couple years ago, now they're $1200 and up??? When did that happen?

For a grand I'd say the DPMS Oracle or a Windham if you can find one. The DPMS is pretty good for the price and shoots well. A windham would have a little better build quality, but nothing you'd scream from the rooftops and would cost a little bit more. Both can be had as flat top uppers (no front sight), so you're free to mount whatever sights/optics you desire. Shop around - I'm sure you'll find some black friday deals any day now...
