I am expecting my new Cadex CDX-30 Guardian Lite to arrive next week.

Looking for educated and experienced opinions as to which scope I should slap on top of it for long range plinking, magnification in the range of x18 - x26. So far, two names top the list for me - Vortex Razor and Nightforce.

Your suggestions, opinions as to the makes of scopes, reticles, magnification, features, bells an whistles, etc., are welcome and appreciated.

My best advice (and what I'm sure others will offer you as well) is to get out to your local club, check out some matches/clinics (ie...TacticalTeacher's PR clinics) and look through and play with as many different pieces of glass as you can. What PersonA prefers in terms of feel, quality, reticles, etc... may be entirely different from PersonB. I will say though that with the bracket of optics your looking at (Razor Gen2 and Nightforce ATACR F1) are definitely worth the money.

Now, to answer the second part of your question, I shoot a Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25x56 MTC/LT with the Horus H59 reticle. I worked with and looked through a lot of glass prior to making my decision (including Leopold, NF, Vortex, Henstoldt, S&B, etc...), and decided that having 1 scope for all my rifles was the way I wanted to go, and I opted for all the bells and whistles I could get. Opinions differ on the H59 (usually by people who haven't used it much, or not at all), but I personally find that I can use the sub tensions when I want (for holdovers), and can look past them when I want to just focus on the centre aim point (when I choose to dial for elevation and windage).

I won't "fanboy" this and say that S&B is the be-all-end-all and to look at nothing else...it was just the option that best-suited my needs (ok, more like wants....lol). I would not hesitate a moment to get a NF ATACR F1 5-25 with an H59 or Tremor reticle.

My $0.02...

My opinion... get the best you can afford. High end scopes make it hard to use anything else haha....

I'm a huge fan of FFP, 10 or more mils per rotation (15 is the cats pajamas), zero stop, and a second rotation indicator. I use mil/mill scopes. If the scope has nice tactile clicks I'm not sure if locking turrets are needed (at least by me).

What distance are you shooting at? I have been shooting a scope with a max mag of 18x at 1300m and it is sufficient. 25x is nicer, but not completely necessary. Probably depends what you are trying to do with it.

I shopped for a scope for a while before deciding on ordering a Vortex Razor AMG sight unseen. I handled the NF ATACR F1, Gen II razor but unfortunately my budge kind of limited me to right around $3k. That budget removed the S&B and TT almost immediately along with the NF. I was able to find the AMG for $3250.

I liked the Gen II Razor except for the weight. The AMG is 20 oz lighter than the Gen II. I am really hoping the AMG is exactly what I want when it finally arrives.

There is no doubt that S&B and Tangent Theta are amazing scopes. Right up there with them are the high end Night Force such as the ATACR line and the BEAST. All (or any) of these will be the "cream of the crop" but they are not cheap. They are also well into the rule of diminishing returns -- wherein it takes a lot of money to see a small improvement in quality. Having said that, if they are not within reach of your budget, do not overlook the Sightron SIII line. They are slightly more than half as much as any of the scopes listed above but have superb glass. I have a Sightron SIII 8-32x56 on an ATRS custom build, and for me, it was the best option.

Hoag has given you some sound advice. The SIII 8-32x56 is the cream of the Sightron line. I have two.
I do have several Nightforce scopes and an S&B. If your budget is not there the aforementioned Sightron will really please you.

I've owned some great scopes. While my S&B was certainly top notch, if I were to purchase a new scope right now, it would be a Kahles 624i. They are available with a left side windage knob (which really makes sense if you are a right handed shooter) and some of the best reticles. Price is better than the PM2. The Nightforce ATACR is only lags behind the 624i because it has less features.

If you are on a budget, I would highly recommend the Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21 (there are different variations) with the G2 reticle. In all honesty, I own this and liked it better than my PM2 w/ P4 reticle. It has served me well.

I have a Leupold Mark 4 8.5x25x50 with TMR reticle illuminated. Scope is mounted in a set of Warne rings and has the Leupold aluminum covers. Let me know if interested
