Yesterday afternoon I was up the road at my neighbours wnen we heard some hounds that sounded like they had something treed, didn't think any more about it until I went for a walk late this afternoon. These guys started tongueing like mad when I got close. At first I thought one was stuck in the fence along the creek, but when I got closer I found his partner stuck in this hole as he barked and scratched at the opening. I took this picture just before I went back to the shop and grabbed the tractor, saw and axe to cut the roots so he could get out.

I brought a rope and one of the boys so we could get the loose hound safely out of the way and jammed a piece of 2x12 in the hole to protect the stuck dog while I cut the roots. By now he had turned around and I could only see his hind end. With the roots cut, and the hole opened up, he was free to go, but I couldn't get the dummy to turn around and come out!

There was a smaller hole near where his head was pointing, so I poked the axe handle down there to try to get him to turn around. Up pops a coon right in my face! He quickly swapped ends when he saw me, which didn't settle the hound down any. I waited by the tractor for about 10 minutes to see if the coon would leave now that the loose dog was gone, but no luck. I went back, poked around and called the dog some more, got another face full of coon, then decided to leave things be since it was getting dark.

I took dog #1back to the house, looked him over to make sure he was okay and tied him up at the shop which is about 300 yards from the creek. As I suspected, the coon must have high tailed it at dusk freeing the "unstuck" hound to look for his buddy, since he showed up at the shop about an hour after I gave up trying to coax him out of the hole.

Went to the neighbours and bummed some dog food, got them fed and watered, checked them both over and called the dog catcher. By the time he returned my call and came to collect them 4 hours had passed, so I had flipped my little utility trailer and stuffed it with straw and they were sleeping soundly inside.

So if these are your hounds call the Pert East dog catcher to claim them. :)

Very nice rescue story to read about. Thank you for saving those two hunting hounds . Now we all will hope for a happy reunion with their family.
I simply can't understand why owners do not at least put collars with name and tel number on their dogs. If they are really hunting hounds, a tracking collar provides even further insurance.

No collars during hunting. They can kill dogs in the bushes or in the hole. A microchip is the only solution. IMHO.

Tracking collars are illegal in Canada. The CRTC won't allow the use of them on Canadian freqs. Pretty ####ing stupid if you ask me.

No collars? I would never run my dog through the bush without a collar. Ever watch one of those hog hunting shows in the US? They all run tracking collars and gps collars.

Good job in saving those pups. They owe you a beer that's for sure.

You can buy them all over the place here

Not sure what your talking about

Couple years ago picked up a dog in the middle of nowhere. Bear dog from a tree planter's camp. Phone # on the collar, no problem. On her way home in the morning. Always have a collar on my dogs with a bell on it in the bush. Leave it loose so they can pull it off if they get hung up. A mouth tattoo is also a good way to identify your pup. That prey drive is sure strong.

I always cared more about my dogs than I did about "rules".

Okay my I found was wrong. It is some collars that run on common freqs that Leo's and firefighters etc use. Like the garmin astro. Seems the cell sim card trackers are okay to use.

But you can't just go to the USA and buy them down there and use them up here. Lots of conflicting rules it seems Canadian versions have to be far More underpowered than us versions legally and fines for running on LED/FF freqs can be upwards of 25K.

Good on you for rescuing the dogs. I have my cell and home number on my collars along with the word reward. I haven't needed it yet for mine but my buddy borrowed a collar and I got a call and paid $100 for his dog that he happily paid back to me.,

They had no collars, and I knew they weren't from the neighborhood, so I called a neighbor that knows everybody, they hadn't heard anything, so my only option was the dog catcher. I'm sure the owner will find them more easily this way, although it may cost him a bit.

I figured there would be some kind of break away collar you could use for hunting dogs in case they got snagged on something.

Good on ya but are you sure the hound was stuck? If there was a coon in there the hound likely dug his way in or squeezed in and wouldn't leave without the coon.

Just wondering, as I'm sure the hound got himself in a bad spot no matter what.

I have seen a hound go after a coyote that broke threw the ice in a drainage ditch. The coyote was light enough to pull himself out, but hound was too heavy. I bet he wouldn't of lasted 5 more minutes if I didn't go in after him. Still didn't want in the truck after he got out of the water, just back to the track but I didn't let him or her would of froze
