A 22-284 Build....The Baboon Slayer...Done Now With Pics

Marshal.........good to hear you're still kicking. I looked him up just to find out how to get in contact but I haven't broached the subject of 23 cal bullets yet. I trust you taught him your secret bonding process? Oh and I got my dies just fine a couple days after you posted last. Thanks. I have to redo that 23-284 on a different action, I really dislike that Marlin the more I play with it and the blind magazine is a real PITA. It is also not long enough and if I'm going to go to the effort to lengthen the throw and magazine on a rifle I'll put the effort into a 700 SA before I will that Marlin. I may keep the Marlin and use it for the 234 Lynx (250 Sav case) it should fit a lot better without any mods necessary. Hope you're shooting more and working less now............still got that pressure testing equipment you were going to sell me, or did that go with the business? Still interested if it's still available. Give me a call sometime and we'll chat........

So, I made up 100 or so (didn't count them) cases for this baby and it took hours. This is the process..........first I start by collapsing 1/2 dozen cases in the 6.5-284 sizer die until I remember that I have to take the sharp edge/burr off the outside of the case mouth. The RCBS case prep station doesn't give a shallow enough taper so I collapse a couple more. Then I remember that I have to use my hand chamfering tool, which I do. Now remember these are all brand new cases so I shouldn't have to lube the case bodies to run them into the 6.5-284 die, and I don't but the necks must be lubed heavily inside and out or guess what.....more inverted shoulders. I dump about 1/8" of RCBS sizing lube into a pill bottle cap and dunk each case mouth down into the RCBS lube and don't wipe any off or more ruined cases. Oh ya and you can't full length them in the 6.5 die or you get huge dents in the shoulders from the lube and again push the shoulder in.
So now I have the process almost perfected and I have successfully made 6 good cases and ruined a dozen..........Next technique I remember is to just start the neck down to 6.5 and then pull back and rotate the case 180* cause they come out much more true using this method. Anyway I'm cooking now and roll out about 100-120 cases of 6.5-284. My hands are cramping from the case chamfering, but I am not collapsing cases any more.
Next step is to neck them all down to 6mm-284, this goes without incident and doesn't require much more lube, I make it through this step without pushing any more necks in. Now they all have to be inside neck reamed with the .243" reamer to thin the necks and then I run them through the 6mm-284 die again and then I have to neck ream them all again with the .243" reamer. These steps are essential or the cases will not chamber with bullets seated.
Next they go through the 22-284 sizer die which I set to snuggly chamber in the rifle. Now I shall actually be able to load these with bullets and powder, however if memory serves me correctly these are still very snug in the neck area of the chamber and after I fireform them to the chamber, I have to outside neck turn to get them all concentric and enough clearance to fire and release the bullet properly. So only another several hours and I shall have some cases for the 22-284 Baboon Slayer.

See nothing to it, really.........f:P:

Forgetting how fast my bullet was going I over lead just a bit on the first shot (the brisket shot) but he only went about 20 mtrs and lay down which is when I gave him the second in the ribs and out where the second photo shows. First shot 100-120 mtrs second shot about 80 mtrs.........both exited. I was impressed as I did not expect an exit. This was a 105 gn Matrix bonded bullet at a touch over 3400 fps from the 23-284.

Of course you could've just gone with a 257 Wby, 100 gr TSX with more speed and less damage. ;)

I wish you the ebst of luck.

I built a 22-250 Akley to shoot 80 MKs. It was very accurate, but had to down load to only 3400 fps to avoid occasional blow ups (1:7)

Once the barrel wore a bit, bullets would start blowing up at lower velocities.

Barrel life was about 1000 rounds.

Don't waste barrel life on too much load development.

Yep Ganderite........that sounds about right......1000 rds. I was experiencing bullet blow up at between 3700 and 3800 fps with 1-8 twist this one is 1-12. Hoping for good load quick so I have enough barrel life left for the baboon hunt........:d:d

I built a 22-284 a few years back. I could have likely saved you a bit of work LOL. Actully a friend of mine built another at the same time. His is for sale on here now actually.
There are a few other guys around here that built them as well. There have been quite a number of deer shot with them around here as well. Mostly with the 80 grain Berger, which ends up being quite devastating on them.
Barrel life is under 1000, a few of the guys are north of 750 rounds and if you dare to put a borescope down the pipe you can see the results.
Brass was a little easier for me to make, (not sure what your reamer specs were). I used nosler 6.5-284 brass, used a 6mm-284 die for teh first step, then the 22-284 for the final step, loaded and shot it.
I do have lots of 284 brass and tried a few that was a bit more of a pain and had some collapsed shoulders.
My gun is on a trued Reminton action, tubbs recoil lug and a 1in 8 twist Brux number 4 fluted barrel, mounted in a bell carlson stock.
I have only loaded 80 grain bergers in mine and settled on 3650 FPS as a load. It would do a little more but didn't figur it was worth it.
One of the other guys had a gain twist 1 in 7 Ron Smith barrel. He was shooitng the 90 grain Bergers out of it. The 90 grain bergers out of that one would vapoize when he pushed it to the limit. I can't remember exactly what speed he got them to.
I have basically stuck to R-25 in it. Tried some N-570, but that stuff is so big it doesnt meter well and is a pain in a 22 caliber case.
I went through a bit of a speed phase with rifles. I did the 257 STW and believe it or not a 257STW Ackley. Now that is the definition of overbore. I have't shot them for years but I think it was pushing a 110 at 4000 FPS.
Let me know.

I made a mistake when ordering my reamer as I could have gotten it with an oversize neck but opted for a standard neck thickness..........hence all the dicking around to get them to chamber. I have one load that chronographed at 3860 fps with the 80 gn Sierra from the 1-8 twist 27" Bevan King stainless barrel the next 4 didn't make the target. This load was also with RL 25 and didn't show pressure, however it pretty much spelled the end of the project as I was looking for 4000 fps and the bullets couldn't stand it at 3800 with the 1-8. So I rebarrelled it with a 31" Kreiger 1-12 stainless and we'll see if this works or not. I'll be on the edge of minimum rotational stability but the bullets should remain intact as long as I can drive them fast enough to stabilize. However I also have some 80 gn A-max and some 75 gn A-max as well as 70 gr Horn HPBT match and some 69 gn Sierra HPBT match and the 500 80 gn Sierra HPBT match. I'm not totally adverse to dropping to a 75 or 70 gn bullet if necessary..........or putting a 1-10 twist barrel maybe........we'll have to wait and see.

Crosshairs right behind the shoulder and watch the head come off? Or are you more sadistic than that?
Either way guaranteed to peel him off that post for good.........

Main thing is to dispatch the bugger. Hopefully, nobody in camp eats baboon so just treat 'em like gophers and shoot 'em in the guts fer that big KAWOK sound.;)

Have you had a chance to take it out and shoot it yet?
Almost makes me want to dig mine out and work with it again.
I got lots of 22 cal bullets and might make for some interesting Sunday afternoons.
Could be a long winter at this rate

Nope, made up some test loads but the weather took a dump into the minuses and a wind picked up, now we have snow. It's picking up though so maybe around Christmas or even before........we'll have to see. I think as soon as Christmas is past I'll start working on my heated shooting/chronographing house and then I won't be so subject to the weather. I'm getting to be a real pussy......as long as it was above -30 and no wind I'd go to the range in Whitehorse. Now if it drops below zero I don't want to go 100 mtrs to my bench and shoot, even though the house is only 100 mtrs away to warm up if I want......JJJJEEEEEZZZZZEEEE. I really am becoming a southerner.........I remember shooting Arctic Winter Games in -40, God what is happening to me...........
