Canik TP9SA vs S&W M&P 9

Well I sold the Girsan and now it's time to buy a polymer pistol, I have not had the chance to shoot either of these and was looking for pros and cons of each and a general recommendation. Also, has there been anything mentioned regarding when we will see the M&P 2.0 in Canada?
 
That's a tough choice, I have shot both , the Canik more than the M&P. The Canik is a very nice pistol, and you obviously have no bias against Turkish guns as you owned the Girsan. The Canik has a great trigger, good ergo's, cold hammer forged barrel, and seems to be a well built gun, but mags are expensive and I don't think it has anywhere near the aftermarket support the M&P has.
I've only shot the M&P twice, but it was ok, trigger wasn't on par with the Canik, but that can be fixed, and those who own them seem to love them. Will you have the opportunity to hold or shoot either or both before you purchase? That would be the best way for you to decide, but not always possible,lol. Good luck in your decision, I'm sure you will enjoy whichever you pick.
 
Yea....Canik...very well made, great trigger, good ergo's, nice weight and balance....it was my choice out of the 2...
 
I have both. For me, the Canik feels better in the hand and as pointed out above has a far superior trigger. In terms of accuracy, the M&P can shoot quite well with loads it likes. However, the Canik is less fussy accuracy wise, and actually shot better with whatever I put through it, right out of the box.

I love my Beretta clone.. it's a beautiful shooter.

M&P 2.0 has a MSRP of $499 USD so you can do the math there and see if you want to wait or not. Personally I would wait until you can get your hands on the M&P 2.0. Especially if the trigger is better, then that saves buying an APEX kit for the M&P 9 which could be on par for prices then since you would save that money.

I have no experience with the Canik so can't say anything in regards to that.
 
M&P felt too top heavy when I held it at North Pro Sports, the Canik feels better balanced, but I've not had a chance to compare side by side at the same time. Both offer a great package/case/accessories straight out of the box.
 
watched an interesting review of the gun your speaking of.
single action gun with a decocker is 2 things that some americans are venomously against it seems!
from what i can gleam if you hit the decocker the gun is dead even if you have a round in the chamber and will need to eject the round to be functional again (since there is no external hammer).
from what is said the only reason it has the decocker is because other versions of the gun where double action and it was cheaper to just keep in on the gun (not sure if that is the real reason but fiscally it sounds reasonable - why redesign and retool for something that is a non issue for most)

as a M&P fan boy i must admit im interested in the Canik/PPQ type guns and also the sig320.
like a fella who likes red heads admiring a blond or brunette.

might have to pick one up to see what all the fuss about the trigger is.

other than the decocker and single action combination every other review i could find online was glowing about the mix of inexpensive and quality of the Canik.
personally i run a couple Turkey shotguns and i really like them but i fear the day i need to get them fixed or get parts for them.
where as my Smiths i can just send over to Murray Charlton.

You can reset the trigger by moving the slide back about 1/2" and releasing it, cocking the striker. No need to eject a round.
 
Sold my M&P9 and bought a TP9SA....not one regret. Loved the feel of the M&P, but I wasn't ready to spend the coin to upgrade the trigger....which was awful. The CANIK is excellent in all aspects....no complaints at all. My wife enjoys and shoots the Canik much more accurately (as do I) .

As for mag prices....$49.99 for a TP9 magazine and IIRC, the M&P mags were about the same.

If the 2.0 version has a better trigger, then it could come down to the price of the pistol. I don't tend to accessorize pistols, so if it works great out of the box in my hands, I am sold.

I have a Canik and can't say enough good about it. Affordable and complete kit. I even like the holster which some have trashed. The de-cocker is no problem at all. 1/4 inch pull on the slide resets it without losing a round. I rarely use it and never had an issue with accidental de-cocker activation. More of a chance with the safety on my 1911.

I have shot the M&P on several occasions as a rental while in the US. Canik over M&P any day unless you do the trigger job. It makes a huge difference! If you spend the extra money on a trigger job you might as well go M&P Pro and get a good shooter out of the box.

Magazines are on par or even less price wise with other brands. $48-$50 range. MecGar makes a very good magazine for the TP9sa. Hmmmm I need 2 more.
