17 Hornet?

My factory ammo is from lot number 315***** could you measure your brass and see what it measures? I found a chamber print online that seemed to say right in front of the rim should be .299. My fired brass is .298.

Just measured a case from lot 3152818, once fired factory load: it measure just under .296 just ahead of the groove.

Just took this picture of the case:

Apologies to the OP for highjacking the thread :)

Still my fired brass measures just 2 thou more than yours just ahead of that ring on my brass. What do yours measure before firing?

An unfired round from that same box measures .295"

I should mention that when my cases get to .299, I find that the primer pockets are generally too loose and I pitch them.

Mine measure .294 and a few measure .293. It simply looks like a looser chamber or smaller than normal brass. I'm very familiar with reloading brass till the case head separates or is about to. ( many many loadings) I usually get a light white mark just in front of that rear line which is the rear of the chamber. That is the tell tale sign of a upcoming separation. This seems to me to just be the rear of chamber mark although it's very excessive. Strange......

I'm measuring with old school calipers, so my figures might be off. Could be if I used a micrometer my figures would be more similar to yours. At any rate, it does appear that your chamber might just be generously sized. You obviously know what you're doing, so glad I could at least provide some comparison.

Cheers.

Been out to the range for the last two days putting some rounds down range with my CZ and it's growing on me. I will be hanging on to it as recommended.

I do like the looks and feel of the Ruger the best but will avoid it. Too many horror stories. You'd think for the money they want they would be problem free tack drivers.

As for the Savage I guess I'll stay clear of it. The bolt on it is huge for no reason.

Maybe Henry will come out with a single shot!!

Wow finally some talk about the 17 hornet! I have had my mind on this little cartridge for a long time but have never gotten one yet. I figured it might be much cheaper to reload for than 223 and powerful on little varmints

Bullets are no problem. Brass can be tricky but it is cheaper to buy loaded ammo and keep the brass. As for powder I like A1680 but it's hard to find. I have 4 lbs so I'm good for a while. I did not like Lil Gun in mine although some guys have had good success with it. Vit N120 is another good one.

I am just in the process of converting 200 22 Hornet in to 17 Hornet. Takes a few steps but it can be done.

As for shooting it I really like mine. It's pure fun on gophers.

My CZ did well with N-120, but I never had Lil Gun at the time to test in it. My Cooper likes Lil Gun, but at 9.5gr, which is below the suggested starting load, it is producing slightly more velocity than the max load listed by Hodgdon.

I'm seeing similar results with lil Gun. I'm loading 9.5 as well and getting approx 50fps over factory. My loading has been limited unfortunately due to life. I wouldn't recommend load development for this round without a crony. Small variations and changes can lead to larger velocity/pressure swings due to small capacity.

When I was rounding up components I couldn't find A1680 but really wanna try it.

John Barsness has an article out on reduced loads in which he uses trail boss in the 17hornet to replicate HMR velocities. Might be fun to play with
