I wonder why the 10mm is thought to be such a strong round while they appear rather demure in appearance in comparison. Sadly we can only buy 'watered-down' 10mm rounds here in Canada....

The .44Mag looks mean, and shoots mean...

.45 a casual shooter easy to enjoy...

9mm the .22 long rifle of pistol calibers.....

Just wonder why some think the 10mm is that much more potent....

The 10mm is loaded to much greater pressure than the 45ACP, which gives it more velocity and therefore more energy. If the 45ACP used thicker brass and was loaded to a higher pressure (like the 45-08 which uses the much thicker 308 rifle brass) you would have a more apples to apples comparison. 45-08 gives close to 44 mag performance.

Well there must be some magic in that 'greater pressure..' cause the brass is a clean third smaller/slimmer than a 45....thus where does that greater pressure reside....?

If you were a reloader you would be familiar with the loading data and would not need to ask this question. Lots of powders will produce the sort of higher pressure found with 10mm. But where those same powders are used in a .45acp they need to be limited to lower amounts to not exceed the allowable pressures for a .45acp round. Ignore those limits and you risk turning the barrel of your .45 handgun into a pipe bomb.

For a glimpse at what a 9mm casing can be pushed to if you exceed the load data limits do a little research into "9mm Major" load data and how it puts 10mm like pressure and power into a 9mm casing. Just don't load such ammo into any Vanilla 9mm or it may be pipe bomb time again. or at least a split barrel.

10mm is a powerful cartridge. It is also very versatile in power and bullet weight and when combined with the right powder ratio the high pressure of the 10mm can really be exploited to great effect.

I don't know why you would think that the 10mm in Canada is "watered down"? Lots of options available, including Buffalo Bore at many Canadian retailers, it sells fast but it is available. Underwood not so much. Some of the self defense ammo like Hydra-Shok and others are down powdered to give best performance for the intended purpose of penetration, expansion and containment in human targets. My current target factory loads are 200grain at 1200fps, not watered down at all.

10mm Auto is a lot more potent than 45ACP. Was that even a question??? I agree. 200 gn at 1200 is not a pansy load by any measure.

I tend to love my 44 magnums.

I regard the 10mm as a 44 mag 'lite' 85% of the power, 35% less recoil.

For 230gr 45acp, factory and my own reloads are ~820fps or approx 330 ft-lbs of energy. I worked up a 10mm load within the max of the Hodgdon manual that gave me ~1375fps with a 180gr bullet - approx 750 ft-lbs of energy. That's pretty much on par with a hot 357mag round.

So have a look.

It all comes down to powder and the time it was designed. The 10mm is the most recent design and uses modern high pressure smokeless powders. Brass is designed for high pressure (35,000psi max). The older cartridges like the 9mm are high pressure(32,000psi) but have a small case volume, the 45ACP is a low pressure cartridge and the 44 Mag(20,000psi max) is this size to make sure you don't use a mag in a gun designed for the 44 spl. If you built a 44Mag to the same pressures as a 10mm it would be a lot more powerful but the case and guns would also have to be redesigned. Nobody wants to do this for safety reasons. Put a super high pressure 44 Mag in a standard pressure gun and KABOOM.

The point of the 10mm is that it works in an autopistol, not that it's the be-all and end-all of power. It's high-end load power falls somewhere between the .357 magnum and .41 magnum...that's pretty respectable just the same.

Well I just bought a box of Federal at a local Canadian Tire.
It quotes 1050fps on the 180's.

My last box of reman .45acp's have a 930fps rating..on a 230grn bullet...

But I also have two brand new boxes of Buffalo Bore 220's rated at 1200fps.....but fraid they might hammer my G20 a little too hard...read about heavier springs requirements etc...as I wish to leave mine stock..

Thx for the explanation on case/barrel pressures etc...sounds like this caliber pistol was designed for big bang rounds...

SO agreed - 10mm do have a punch....but boy the ammo is expensive...~!
