My wife bought me a nice take down rifle from Trade Ex for Christmas, Verney Carron Impact Plus in 9.3x62. I finally had a chance to shoot it today. The first three shots were very promising! 2.5cm 3 shot group with the open sights at 100M. I can hardly wait to put a scope on it and try some more extended shooting sessions.
I need to find a compact hard case and a good set of detachable/repeatable scope mounts for it now. I have been looking at the EAW Eramatic mounts, and they look very good, but I am confused when choosing between seven different locking options. Which do you prefer and why?
Do you have any suggestions for a case manufacturer? Most that I have found are much too large, the inside of the case only needs to be as long as the barrel - 63CM

For a soft case, camera tripod bags work well and are cheap. Yours might fit into a 24" and most certainly a 26". I lined mine with closed cell sleeping bag pad foam liner for protection.

This works really well for tossing behind the seat of your truck.

Longwalker,

very nice choice. and good result on that target.

get yourself a favor and just in case get an extra magasine.

i will check my gun case that im using for a take down to see what can be fitted in.

why only EAW? you have to check with them about the kind of scope you want to put on .. bases are the same except for the magnum calibers but rings depending on the kind of scope.

LW.........I got a very nice hard case, all leather bound from Wolverine supply. I was for my Merkel double and I don't know for sure if they have others, however you could redo the inside to accommodate your rifle fairly easily.

I saw 2 hunters in Zambia that had 4 rifles in soft cases in a locking golf hard travel carry container..........I thought it was quite ingenious. Baggage handlers probably see golf bags all the time and pay little heed to them, unlike obvious gun boxes.

I use Nigrini hard case for my take down rifles.
Small, light, no foam, but very protective. I have one version that can carry both my double and a Fabarm Iris takedown (both broken down) with scopes for each....and you can throw it into another soft bag with other soft gear and no one will look twice at it as you go through airports or hotels.
That allows you to meet the size limits required by most airlines these days without going to cargo rates as with most full length pelican type cases.
After lugging those bigger SKB or Pelican type cases through airports and paying big surcharges, the breakdown is the only way to travel.
I have wrestled with the types of mounts for my travel rifles as well. Many good choices, but I have changed to a pic rail for all, as it is indeed universal and your backup scopes can fit any rifle you choose to bring.
That VC is a wonderful rifle and an excellent choice of caliber as well.

Thanks for all the good advice and comments so far. I'm going to look into Negrini cases. As far as the EAW mounts, I want very good quality and absolute reliability, and a slim design. I won't put picatinny bases on such a nice rifle, to me they're for military arms and kinda ugly. I'm not sure if there are other good options, perhaps Recknagel.

Do you absolutely need QD scope mounts? It looks like the barrel is several inches longer than the buttstock/receiver module. If you put a fairly short scope on this gun (which seems in keeping with the chambering) it might not extend beyond the receiver far enough to make the length of the scoped section any longer than the barrel, so it would still fit into any length case that works for the unscoped rifle. Just a thought...

Take-down rifles will spoil you rotten for travelling with a gun. :) The idea of flying with a full-length gun case ever again will be ridiculous!
