Hey, handgun folks.

I've never liked double-stack nines very much. Everything I've ever put a hand to in that realm felt like grabbing a multi-bit screwdriver or a fencepost. Clunky, awkward, wrong. And then, the other day, I had cause to put my hands on a CZ.

The clouds parted.

The sun shone down.

A clear voice spoke, from everywhere and nowhere all at once. It said "My son, too long have you walked the earth in pursuit of something that eats 9mm ammunition and doesn't feel bad in your hands. Thou hast laid thine grubhooks on My pistol, the CZ. Thou shalt buy one posthaste, lest my wrath be great and quick in coming."

And so, commanded by God himself, I find myself planning to drop money on a Czech pistol. But I realize I know so little. Pre-B? Post-B? I am ignorant in the ways of the CZ. Please, hivemind, get this poor pilgrim up to speed.

The B is for block. (Fireing pin block) some will argue the pre B will have better trigger and do prefer it myself, but I don't think it makes much difference. More mental thing as far as I'm concerned. CZ are good pistol and I don't thing you can go wrong. I use them for over 20 years and they are always pleasant to shoot.
 
I'd personally go with a Cz 75 sp-01 shadow.


The model is a 75, the sp-01 means full length dust cover then shadow means no firing pin block and other various upgrades compared to the sp-01 and 75.

Throw some Lower powered springs and a nice polish and your golden.
 
I am the opposite, I love my plastic 9mms but I wanted to try something different.

I just ordered a Tristar P120 which is a Turkish SP01 copy on a whim. I couldn't resist for $400 OTD brand new. Might be a cheap way to try them out if they are available in Canada. If I like it I think I'm going to pick up a Shadow 2 in the next year or two.
 
You can not go wrong with any variant or the cz75 Dan, if you think it's nice to hold with the stock grips, just wait till you dress one up with hogue grips or a nice set of VZ grips.

Personally I like the hogue grips the best, like my wife says, "It feels like ###, in your hand."

The best part about the cz75 series is how they shoot. I never even considered buying a cz 75 until I shot one, 1 mag later and I went shopping. :D
 
For rapid fire competitions the Shadow in one form or the other is the way to go because the extra mass of the full length dust cover and rail up front aids in reducing the recoil rise and aids in getting a more rapid re-acquisition of the sight picture. But for more casual use the difference in this matter between the stock 75 and 85 and the Shadow is really not a big one. I've got both a Shadow and a nice Pre-B. Unless I shoot them side by side I really don't notice a big difference. But technically it's there and for rapid fire matches the heavier framed Shadow in one form or another has the slight advantage when all else is equal.

There are some, I'm one of them, that likes the fiber front sight of the Shadow for fast initial sight picture acquisition from a holster draw and the easily confirmed sight picture stability during rapid fire. But for slow paced bullseye use the fiber really isn't a big deal one way or the other.

If you have smaller hands and that is why the CZ fits you well then another gun to try out when you get a chance is the Ruger SR9. For 9mm guns the SR9, the CZ and the single stack 1911's are three of the guns I've found that fit smaller hands really well. Yet they also fit large hands decently. Next up would be the M&P with the smaller back strap.

I believe that the CZ fits well because the grips have an egg like shape with the pointy end of the egg being along the back strap. The step in the frame behind the mag well allows for this option. And it was a good design feature by the original designer. One not often seen in other guns that are not CZ clones.
 
i have the CZ-75B, upgraded the grips, and wont ever consider selling it, ive bought and sold numerous other 9mm`s, but this one is staying, only thing i`ll do now is move up the cz list, but i wont ever get rid of the B, it was my first pistol, and most favourite

the B is great price point for a starter pistol that will last a long time, then the skys the limit, my local store keeps tempting me with the shadow though.lol
 
So far, I have seen the shadow 1 for as low as $869. I was hoping they would get down to $800 and have heard people say they did get them on sale for around that! If anyone happens to see them on sale, please let me/us know! I am getting more and more interested in one of these! What, if anything needs to be done to improve the shadow1 or any CZ for that matter?

You don't "need" to do anything to any of them, you just need to decide which options you want and then purchase that model. Me, I opted for the CZ85 as it is just a 75 with ambi and adjustable sights FI front. Did I mention I LOVE THIS GUN.

Lower powered springs 11 lb recoil, 13 lb main spring, reduced power trigger pin cgw's floating trigger pin, extended firing pin and reduced power firing pin spring, Czc competition hammer, I've got a pre-b disconnector but I'd go with cgw's new improved short reset disco and a Cz 85c trigger.

Add a bunch of polishing and your set.

Bought a "Canadian Edition" a couple of years back and love it.Didn't add or subtract anything to it and it goes bang every time.Shoot regular IDPA matches with it and only problem I had was rear sight came loose.Cleaned the rear up with brake clean,blue lock tight and we're back up and running.Besides I'm a Czech second generation and my father's from Brno (big gun manufacturing city) so I'm almost expected to get a CZ.That's the story I told my wife,and I'm sticking to itw:h:
 
Had the pre-b...trigger was good, ergo's were just what you'd expect from Cz...whichever you choose you will be very happy...and probably want another...
 
I have to say...my pre-b was my only pistol to give me hammer bite....and I couldn't bring myself to bobtail it....
