Ok guys...I'm finally going to "bight the bullet" and go for my RPAL in a couple weeks. Just looking for suggestions on a first pistol. Trying to stay below $600. Remington rp9? S&W SD9? Other suggestions? Thanks.
 
I've only been shooting handguns for a few months but I am hearing great things all around about the Canik TP9s. They are $560 at most places, for instance: http://www.cabelas.ca/product/88355/canik-tp9sa-semi-auto-pistol

The SD9 is definitely a budget minded pistol but in all the right places. Aside from the horrible trigger travel and 8.lbs pull... how can you say no to the price. Canik definitely better, but the price speaks to that. Its also a Turkish gun if Geo-politics is an issue.
 
The S&W SD9 has a horrible trigger and the Remington has been getting poor reviews all over.

Try a Girsan, a lightly used FN FNS, the previously mentioned Canik or the Ruger SR9 in that range. You might also find a M&P 9 range kit or Walther PPX in that range +/- a few bucks.

What he said! Hell the new M&P 2.0 is even in that price range, I have seen them for $599. Canik Tp9sa is a fantastic gun for $550 or so, PPX is also a good gun, both come with the range kit, holster and mag holder. The FNS9LS is my favorite out of the guns mentioned, but price has gone up, a used one can be had in your price range, new slightly above your $600 budget. Happy hunting for your first!

The trigger is great. Smooth functioning.
$600 (or less) gets you the whole deal. Pistol, 3 mags, holster and double mag pouch.
I was making loonie size five shot groups with it right out of the box.
 
Another vote for the steel Jericho. Was my first restricted and in 40S&W. Decent price on the range kit, still enjoy taking it out on the range everytime I go.
 
I'm guessing by the options you listed you arent interested in a .22, which would have been my first suggestion. In that case, buy a used 9mm if on a budget as everything else is too expensive off the shelf to shoot while developing the proper skills. I would say look for a gently used CZ75/85 if you want a 9mm but don't know your action preference.
 
Currently a lot of sub $500 milsurp Beretta 92s out there. They won't last forever. Arguably the 92 will stand toe to toe with any production handgun on the market.
 
The SD9VE is a pretty good inexpensive starter gun. Keep in mind that the gun has no thrills. Its a very basic gun but its a gun that will be very reliable. For $399.99 that saves you some money for ammo, lockable gun case, and trigger lock because you will need all that. Sometimes stores put them on sale for 349.99. Save yourself an extra $56 with the tax difference. That will buy you an extra mag. If you pick everything up on a sale day it will get you a bunch of extra stuff on that $600 budget and I know lots of people with out licenses that purchase a restricted firearm on a sale day and the store just holds it until you get your restricted and they can transfer it to you. Yea the SD9VE's trigger is heavy. 8lbs. But if you can master that trigger dude you can shoot anything.

Used guns on the EE are always great. You can get a very good quality, lightly used gun, for your price range easily. Glock, M&P, CZ 75.
