RIP and condolences to the family.
To the anti-hunting crowd posting nasty crap to his wife on Facebook, go **** yourselves you ignorant douchebags.

I dont call someone that throphy hunts a hunter. They do it for sport and their own reasons.

Luckily the rest of the world isn't bound by your beliefs or any other single person's beliefs for that matter......

If not for "sport", then why hunt at all?.....

I would, however, suggest that a non hunter coming into a hunting forum, especially into a thread dedicated to memorializing the death of a fellow hunter is low class at best.....

Exactly. The 11lbs of meat i got from my very first turkey (more like 9lbs of actual eating meat) was icing on the cake but if i was hunting strictly for meat then 150$ for roughly 10lbs of meat makes that the worst shopping trip ever lol

Hunting is an outdoor activity not an actual sport per se as practiced in modern times. I hunt for the enjoyment of the activity first and the meat second since as mentioned if I hunted just for the meat it would cost me about $50/lb for pheasant. The man died doing an activity he loved and though tragic is not the worst way to slip the mortal coil.

With respect you're not a hunter then either if you don't understand it or choose not to learn. You can choose to shoot "meat does" and feel good about it, but all "trophy" hunting is, is hyper-selective hunting. Guys that generally have done so much hunting their interests have focused on prime mature examples. They love the challenge and see little interest in driving logging roads to fill the freezer and heading home that night. To use cars as an example, from hondas to finding once in a lifetime classics. If you don't view a guy who spends up to two weeks sitting in pounding rain looking for a particular bear, having a legal male bear in front of him at under eighty yards for twenty minutes but not pulling the trigger as the bear still had many years left and time to grow, then respectfully you don't know what hunting is and I'm not surprised you're unable to define a very selective hunter as one. I just guided that guy, the selective hunter, and the bear scenario was real. He'd also passed on other bears elsewhere, that is as true of hunting as it gets, equally worthy of respect as the freezer filler. I actually see and admire the effort and restraint as something impressive.

This guy that died in the elephant incident comes from a world few here have visited or will understand. Elephants are in trouble, yes, but not everywhere, many places there are too many and they're pounding out and beating dry their habitat. Hunting serves a critical role in maintaining the health of populations and areas, and without hunting income the herds are poached out completely and replaced with cattle. YouTube "Trophy Hunting by College Humor", it'll spell it out in your language. Some college age typical anti crowd folks looked into African trophy hunting and discovered it's actually a good thing. But folks that have made their mind up like Dilligaf that they know better are unlikely to go to the effort. Sad day for this guy's five kids, and seems they may not have even been hunting elephant at the time, just bad luck. I've walked here, and elephants are not to be trifled with, he went out with his boots on doing something a lot more impressive for a living than most.

Condolences to the family of this man.

A couple of members have posted some rather disappointing and tasteless comments either by saying it was "karma" or "he isn't a hunter"..... Folks like you are whats wrong with the hunting community nowadays and your point of view is just downright wrong. Get over yourself.

Very well said.

Dying doing something you love is the way I would like to go. Mr. Botha did just that, his wife and children should be allowed to grieve in peace and not be harassed by people who have different views than his.

I have more unfilled tags then cut tags in my gun room and its by choice. I would much rather watch smaller bucks or does come in and walk away a dozen time than shoot it for the freezer, which is what happened last season. I was waiting for a particular buck and he didn't show so I went home empty handed after spending many hours in blinds and tree stands. To ME these deer are the future for the herd and all hunters.

If another hunter choses to harvest a non mature buck or a doe for the "freezer" I do not hold it against them, they are hunters and have the right to make their own choices. I have shot my share of does and smaller bucks but now am more picky as to the an animal I put my tag on.

That being said I did take a Jake turkey this year, I'm new to turkey hunting and this was the best bird in the area I had permission to hunt. I chose to take the Jake this year, next year will probably be different.

So am I a trophy hunter or a freezer filler, I would say neither. I am someone who loves the outdoors ,hunting and having the right to make my own chooses.

People are allowed to make their own chooses and should not be judged, as long as its legal and ethical.

RIP Mr. Botha and condolences to your family, I would be willing to bet you were a father and husband first and a hunter second.

Thank You for stating your (my) views so eloquently!
