What moose cartridge?

I favor my 416 Rem. Mag. and a broadside shoulder shot as shown for Moose. Breaks both shoulders and severs the spinal chord. Always DRT. My 458 Win. Mag. and properly loaded 45-70 work great also.

I've used smaller calibers with results not always as positive.

Does a lung or heart shot moose die any faster if shot with a 308 win or 300wm?

Weatherby would say his 30 caliber magnum would. He was a proponent of faster bullet speed producing quicker kills.

Not so sure about a heart shot because it's destroyed and only a matter of a short time that it could run before collapsing shot with either (or most any) round.

I see this has devolved into a "you need a big gun to kill a moose" thread. Remember, magnums are the lift kits of the hunting rifle world. A lot of compensating.

Any meat wasted?

.308 is an excellent round and it has plenty of options for reloading so you can develop those perfect rounds custom made for your platform.

I've not taken moose, but I've seen a lot of kills in video. Seems to me that with bullets or bows, taking out the lungs within reasonable distance for caliber drops them quick.

The trouble with that shot is that if the bullet lands a bit high it only hits the little spine fins. Results can be iffy.

Uhmm .. maybe you've never hunted in the mountains of B.C.?
Your wounded trophy can easily fall down a 2000 foot precipice or disappear in a thick stand of Douglas Fir that will seem endless. etc. etc.

Perhaps you might want to consider getting him to stand somewhere else, lol.

Are you telling me that a moose shot through the heart with a 300wm will die quicker than one shot with a 308 win?

Yes. Given the same bullet and distance the 300WM will penetrate deeper, hit harder and do more damage. We're not talking about stabbing them with knitting needles, these are expanding projectiles that require velocity to expand. Look at the ads that Swift puts out showing the results at impact velocities. Look at their condition at 308 impact velocities (at the target distance, not muzzle) then add 200 fps to it and look at that result. More speed=more expansion+more penetration=more damage=dead sooner.

Shooting edible animals through the shoulders is a luxury afforded only to people who live in areas where you can get lots of tags. I prefer eating moose than feeding it to my dogs because it's bloodshot.
