New to AR15. Charging handle question

If your BCG is not going into battery then you're either riding the charge handle or your gun is poorly built.

I was riding the charging handle. I remember hearing about doing a silent charge somewhere and it being the only reason for the forward assist these days. I was only able to do it before ever firing it. Now it locks up no matter how lightly I do it.

going to the range soon, guys.. AR-15 so far looks to me like a beautiful woman with hairy legs... hopefully will shave them at the range

Uh the ar vs sks is like a sport bike vs a tractor trailer.

Completely different animals for different purposes. I'd take an ar-15 time and time again vs a clunky sks.

100% agree with you. I've not shot my SKS in years. I think the OP has a leaning towards Combloc guns. To each their own.
A beautiful woman with hairy legs can be remedied very quickly. An ugly woman with shaved legs is still ugly. And braiding the armpits won't help either.

well I hope the comparison to hairy women work for AR15, that's where I was leaning towards :)

P.S. So far I am not impressed... I am taking my SKS to the woods if SHTF, not this one: overall construction is kind of like a rifle for a kid, my son has a toy rifle it feels better built than M+P sport 2

It's the furniture, especially the hand guard, that makes it feel cheap. Swap it out for some better quality stuff. The A2 grip was the first thing to go.

yup, changing the grip, which is totally crazy
next I have to find longer length of pull stock
so far I found this:
dsc_0014.jpg

increases length of pull from 10in to 12 "
Strike Industries Viper MOD-1 Stock

and this:

from MagWedge

Not sure if these are good choices???
Well, at least they are not costing me ridiculous 300+ buckz for the stock alone

Maybe if you got a higher end ar you'd experience something better. Can't expect much from 650$... My charging handle and trigger cost more than that.

I'd trust my life to my Colt Canada. It's real quailty keeps going without cleaning for thousands of rounds. Sits dirty for 6 months, little bit of g96 and it's good for another 500 rounds. Not a single malfunction in 3k+ rounds, other than the case failure from the free norinco ammo I got from a guy at the range (rifle kept going but I had to stop and confirm it wasn't a squib). The rifle has been outsanding in every match I've shot it in.

If I like AR, I will go higher level.
So far I like: Mag release, light weight
Don't like bolt release, strange charging handle-would definitely like it on the left and bolt release on a thumb-iI guess, some like XCRs have some of those features

Maybe I should have clearly separated those two paragraphs better. The first was the OPs, the second is mine. I honestly don't have a problem with the actual rifle at all, aside from the furniture. I just can't believe that the OP prefers the SKS. I have one as well and I can't remember the last time I shot it. Mind you, I bought a CZ 858 first, so I'm a little biased.

Can you explain how "feel" effects performance? The answer is that it does not, so I wouldn't judge the rifle on your opinion of feel. If the rifle performs poorly then you may have something to complain about, however as mentioned above you get what you pay for.

You do not need a longer length of pull, you need to learn to shoot a rifle properly as in squared off to the target. A shooting buddy of mine is 6'4" and shoots his AR with the stock collapsed...

OK, had to shoot M+P sport 2... here are my Russian impressions:

DISLIKE
1. all furniture is garbage
2. buffer tube-too short
3. magpul peep sights suck
4. the charging handle is too small and it moves like a piece of sh... when BHO is engaged; charging handle should be on the left for right hand shooters. very cheap aluminum
5. minimalistic attaching system
6. Handle sucks-not ergonomic, no storage system
7. Overall feeling of a very fragile system

Do like
1. Light weight
2. Pleasant kick
3. Mag release and Bolt release are good
4. After another 500-600 +$ of investments the outcome will likely become satisfactory

nothing to do with shooting rifle correctly-it has something to do with individual mechanics/ ergonomics

the feel of fragile rifle has a lot to do, if you happened to drop your rifle.. on a concrete floor
I don't think current config will survive it very well-please don't tell me that you have to care about your rifle, don't drop and other obvious things

AR15 is not fragile rifle. Go to BattleField shooting range Las Vegas and see their select fire M4s.
There is not a single upper or lower broken after hundrad of thousands rounds fired full auto down range every month. But they have your favourite AKs with broken receivers and trunnions after same kind of torture.

M+P sport 2 looks like it is and that's what I am referring to. The video was not about all ARs, but a particular one.

I am sure those ARs sold at 2000 - 3000CaD are well built, how those compare to military version-I don't know, but civilian low end version like M+P sport 2 would not survive such a torture

Did they fire military version in Las Vegas or super pricey/ super well built ones? I bet if you try military versions, used in regular army the experiment will show opposite results
