Stainless vs blued barrel

Like I said, it's called stainLESS not stainPROOF. A stainless rifle still needs a good wipe down with oil once in a while.

Yeah. Thanks. Again. My rifles are always cleaned and oiled. Still happened.
My point is a nice blued rifle won't rust away. I've got blued rifles ceracoted that seem to be fairly impervious.
OP I would buy the stainless for 200 more personally.

A blued gun last just as long as stainless. It is all about the care you put into them. Clean them, oil them and they will all out live you. I love the look of blued. It is a personal choice. I have both but still prefer the look of a blued gun.

I have looked at hundreds of hunting rifles over the last 50 years... the vast majority of well used blued barrels show pitting in the bore close to the muzzle usually... you don't get that with a stainless barrel.

I was leaning towards the SS. I do like the look of synthetic with SS more than synthetic with blued.

That being said, I will have to shoulder both makes and see which one fits better. Choice is between a tikka t3 and a weatherby vanguard S2.

That's pretty interesting. I would not have thought that.
But does that also not lend itself to inferior cleaning products and materials over the last 50 years or so of firearm construction and product availability?

OP both of those rifles are fine hunting rifles. My biggest gripe with the S2 is the non floated barrel.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Looks pretty sharp to me. I had another Sako with exceptionally nice wood. Picked this one up used for a really great deal (no more than the price of a new Tikka) and never took the nice one out again (actually ended up selling it). Rain, snow, dropped in the mud, tree branches, who cares. Now I can concentrate on the hunt and not the rifle. All I buy now is stainless. The Tikka and Sako rifles have about the best quality stainless you can get in a rifle. If you're concerned about the stainless possibly being more detectable by wildlife you can always have it Cerakoted grey or black and it will still look nice.

Out of the Tikka or the Weatherby I would go with the Tikka. Tikka has a really nice trigger (same trigger as the Sako's). Weatherby although it is a great gun too, it is a heavy gun.

I would go with the weatherby. I have a t3 and gf has a vanguard. Hers is 3x the gun of the tikka.

Stainless 100%,

A deeply blued rifle w/ walnut stock is beautiful and envokes pride of ownership, but that's where the pros end for me in a hunting rifle (more poor weather hunting days than good here on the coast) . If you're talking SS/synthetic vs Blued/synthetic, the Blued/synthetic has zero benefit over the SS other than price..... zero.

$200 is a drop in the bucket looking at the big picture, IMO.

Good luck with your decision.

Well.... carbon steel doesn't blow up as often. So I guess there is actually one perk to carbon guns. Lol

There is also a guided Elk hunt You Tube video showing a Browning doing the classic barrel banana split as well.
After seeing the above Sako I certainly would not be buying one until more information was forthwith.
Completely off topic to the conversation though , so will not derail with further comments.
But, I am surprised this hasnt been discussed before here on CGN.

It has been discussed. They had a small batch of stainless barrels where they screwed up the heat treat and/or metal composition years ago. No need to make it a Sako bashing thread, from what I've read all defective ones have been accounted for. Most banana peeled barrel pics you see are from idiot users with dirt plugged muzzles or reloading screw ups. All things being equal, a CM barrel will split just as easily as a stainless.

You sure about that bud? There is no shortage of "blown up" CM rifles.

x2 it's comical how inevitably somebody posts that picture to suggest it's a common problem with either stainless or sako rifles. Google pretty much any rifle you want, and you can find a picture of one that failed. This isn't news - and I can guarantee more CM rifles have blown up than stainless, since they were around a lot longer.

Are you sure about that?
