BCL102 Range Review, SECOND RANGE TRIP POST 123!!!

So I went to the range today, pretty much same results as everyone else.
Minus about 20 jams not sure why?
I found the 2 10 round xcr mags were the worst so I stopped using them and stuck with the IMI
but even the imi and some fails. Rather disappointing but I think more of a mag issue?

178 precision hunter... don't bother they were pretty bad.
165 interlock American white tail.. same not very good
168 A-max not very good
the AE 150 grain FMJ boat tail actually were pretty damn good
BY far the most consistent were the lead bullets 165 game king and 180 Nosler pt
not the best groups but still the best.
now Im no expert by any means but I have shot a few quality AR-10s that were 1moa im wondering
where the difference is.
Im actually even more curious (if possible well find out soon enough) If this rifle would perform better fitted with a Shilen or Krieger barrel...
oh and I cant wait for my tigger, I found it very hard to shoot/ get used to with this factory one.

I had no issue with the IMI mag I got with the rifle or the XCR-M mags I bought from Reliable.

BUT, I did have problems with the FNM NATO ball ammunition & discontinued use. My malfunctions looked just like yours!

And I fired 20 rounds of Norinco ball, the first fired, extracted, ejected & then failed to feed a fresh cartridge into the chamber, it hung up on the way into the chamber. I discontinued use when I saw another member post a pic of the rim ripped off & I don't want to damage my 102 with steel case ammo. THAT BEING SAID, MFS steel case ammo worked fine! Just wasn't accurate enough imho...

As Mystic Precision said, most factory ammo is set up for bolt guns. The 102 shows promise, as others & I have posted.

Cheers
Jay

I have had similar results. Mine does not seem to like heavier ammo, but it will group 150gr in about 1.5" at best. I noticed this with my handloads I tried as well. I want to try Jay's recipe as I think that may be the ticket for now. I have also found the XCR-M mags to cause malfunctions but only with the Norinco ammunition in my case. It functions fine with all ammo when using the IMI mag. I am now somewhere between 300-350 rounds through my rifle.
The rifle was a big hit for those that recognized it so some folks were shooting it

Here are my groups from today:
They were shot in mild wind, and I was not using a led sled, but improvised rests as I always do when shooting from a bench. My reticle was stable on the targets, and there was some minor heart beat movement but no more than .5MOA at worst. So you could probably subtract at least .25MOA from these groups as human error if you wanted to. I kept the barrel luke warm when shooting these groups.

good shooting! Ya I have to try some other loads and see what may work the best.
I will pick up a few P-mags as well to try and narrow where the jams are from.

My P-Mags work flawlessly with everything I have shot so far but they are quite difficult to properly seat the first few times, especially with the bolt forward.

After using them a while they seat normally.

yes I found it very hard to seat my mags with the bolt forward. I will try p mags and see how they work out.
I guess ill try some more 150s as well. that seems to be where the most luck is.

seems a lot of people tend to have some issues with feeding or extracting,

can't wait to get mine and test it out.

I think it has something to do with xcr magazines and certain ammunition. I haven't had any extraction issues thus far, but have had the feeding issues I mentioned with the XCR mags and norc surplus.

Mine has about 100 rounds through it no fail to feed, fire or eject - using imi and pmag. And it is weird that your gun seems to like light bullets more - mine is exact reverse 168 GMM and 178 ELDX is its sweet spot right now.

i can not wait for my timney as my trigger is about a 4 stage trigger - I have started to figure it out but it will be nice to have a consistent break.

I'd like to buy many mags, many types of ammo right away so I could test everything as the 102 arrives

unfortunately I'm poor right now so not happening LOL

the more I read around the forum, all 102 seems to be performing a lot differently.

not sure if a good thing or not

Don't forget what Mystic Precision said, that most commercial ammo is made for bolt guns... So, the powder load etc isn't tuned to the gas 102 semi.

I am REALLY looking forward to his accuracy test & running up ammo for the 102. God it's gonna be GREAT!

Cheers

Yea I was all excited for the 178 ELD-X rounds and nothing came of it. I was disappointed. Perhaps with the same bullet trying handloads would work out better. I will do that at some point down the road.

I agree. I will be keeping a close eye on that.

I have some lapua cases loaded with noslers 155s
some empties ready to be tuned to the rifle.

@driller, is your scope the 3-9 or the 3-12 ?

A friend of mine is gonna lend me his 3-12 ar optic to put on.
also what ring height do you rock on there ?
thanks !

edit : never mind I just re-read your post and saw 12x !

Yup 3-12x40mm scope on burris tactical med rings. I had a fun situation with a 6-20x scope hunting so decided to have a lower min power from now on :p

Something came out close to you?

I had a buck come out 15yds from me. All I saw was body in the scope so I just pulled it.

Yup same happened to me. I identified it, then looked through the scope and all I saw was fur haha got em in the heart but still it made me re-think my optics choices.

Hey guys this semi auto voodoo ammo stuff is garbage. These are direct impingement semi autos. No OP rods, large bolt carriers etc and the bolt locks into the barrel extension. The AR is the exception to the semi auto world.

Load for the barrel the same as a bolt gun. The problem is it's a weird length and 1:10 twist rate. Most match ammo is loaded for 20-26" barrel lengths and are designed to hit the accuracy node for that length. Just don't load too hot or too low. Really that's the only difference. There is really no magic to it. The problem is finding what an odd barrel combination likes.

Keep in mind the AR308 has essentially replaced the tactical bolt gun in 308 for military and police.

yeah the 178 ELD-X literally looked like buckshot on my target, was not liking that ammo that's for sure. Im going to have to try more 150s
not the biggest fan of 150gr but it is what it is.
