I tend to rotate the rifles I take hunting. More than a few excellent hunting rifles in the collection and would like to see how all of these perform. I happened to be carrying my .375 H&H Magnum Sako 85 Kodiak.

Duped this one with calls which got suckered into entering a clearing. I waited for it to approach within 40 meters. It stopped and stood facing toward my position. I aimed and fired a 300gr AB at 2300 fps MV into the base of its neck. Amazing how fast a Bull Moose can move! It quickly turned at right angles and galloped toward the treeline (much better than toward me!). I quickly chambered another round, led it by about ½ a meter aiming ahead of its shoulder, and fired. Quite a sight to see a 1000+ lb animal pile up stone dead under full gallop!

I expected the Moose, with all the accolades bestowed upon the venerable .375 as a heavy game stomper, to drop at the first shot. My initial reaction was surprise that the first shot had absolutely no effect at all, as if the Moose didn’t even feel it. But then it’s only a .375, below the caliber threshold for imparting debilitating shock as I have learned using sub .40 and .40+ calibers over the years. Further confirmation that sub .40’s impart inadequate/marginal shock on heavy game.

Anyhow, the fine Kodiak rifle got the job done with me doing my part (plus a little more!) to replenish the meat supply which will last for quite a while. No, the .375 didn’t work to my satisfaction because it didn’t produce a 1 shot DRT kill. But I really like the Kodiak. When I purchased it, I was thinking of converting it to a .40+ caliber. Problem is that it’s such a pretty and well-made rifle, mechanical artwork really, that I’m reluctant to alter it. I wish Sako made the Kodiak in .40+ calibers but they don’t.

Use the .375 again on Moose? Probably not. I know better to stick with using one of my .40+ calibers.

Why the base of the neck? All the moose I've shoot were heart and/or lungs and they didn't go far or last long and I use a 308

Nice shooting and bull but the rest has to be trolling? 375 h&h inadequate for a moose!? Taking magnumittis to a whole new level. Que the copy and pasted quotes in 3...2....1....

Clearly you are new around here. If it doesn't collapse like a pickup was dropped on it, it's inadequate in Slamfire's opinion. Lol

Personally, I'm taking my 270 win and 303 brit on my moose hunt next month...

No matter what you are packing, Slamfire, there is NO guarantee of a DRT 1 shot kill on a moose.
I had a close friend drive a .458, 510 grain softpoint through a moose's vitals [and great placement, BTW]
the moose still ran close to 75 meters before piling up. Moose often do not react to a deadly hit immediately
I have shot over 50 of the big cervids, and have seen them in pretty well every situation after the shot.
Some fold right there. Some stand around for 30-40 seconds, and then fold. Others will run, regardless of
the cannon you shoot them with. However, they will not run far before piling up if the shot is placed right.
D.

Agreed, no guarantee of a 1 shot DRT kill but there's a greater chance of it happening with a high speed .40+ in my experience.

I like my .458 Win. Mag. with the Hornady 500gr IL RN bullet at about 1700 fps impact speed which produced a 1 shot DRT kill.

Not totally inflicted with magnumitis, I also favor my .45-70 Marlin for Moose.

FWIW I shot a moose on thursday at about 50 yards, facing directly at me and hit him square in the chest with a 180 gr 300 wsm federal trophy bonded. Exit wound high on his back about the 3rd rib right side. He took off running left to right slightly quartering away and I hit him again this time on the right side about the forthi rib and exit through the left shoulder. He stopped and turned and looked directly at me from about 60 yds and started walking towards me. I hit him with the 3rd shot within an inch of the first shot and the exit hole in almost exactly the same place. He just stood there, turned around, took about 2 steps and went down.
Sometimes they just don't realize they're dead

Nice shooting, you got 'er done. Ideally 1 shot, instant drop. I took 2 and it was a quick demise for the Moose. Something to be said for the total effectiveness of the 2nd shot. Frontal shot isn't ideal, prefer broadside of course.
