Daver_II's DIY "Black?" lever gun build. *with pictures

Looks great. I love the sewing job and the fact that the ammo holder and cheek riser are easily removable with velcro is pretty slick!!

Yeah, I have a fw reservations as velcro isn't quiet... but, I shouldn't be removing them while hunting, only to remove the ammo for storage.

Obscures way too much target and is really hard to see, depending on eyes, and I need glasses. They're good for sun glare at certain angles. I've removed my hood, painted the front sight till I can replace it, and put a short rail and red dot on my 336BL.

Why do you hate front sight hoods? I'm actually just curious why someone hates them. I put them on to stop the front sight from rapping my gun cases.

Closest pic to the stock wood I could find... now think less grain visible and more of a dog turd colour.

The black paint shows the grain better.. somehow..

Not I can buy a Boyds stock set with much nicer walnut for not a lot of money.... but the paint was much cheaper.

Fare enough. Not sure about Marlins flimsy looking hoods but the ones from Williams front sights and CZ rifle are surprisingly very strong steel. The front sight hood on my CZ is bent because I fell down a small hillside hunting on a snowy day. The front sight itself had no mark on it but the hood is bent. I tried in a vice with pliers but I could not bend it back all the way. Just lets me know just how hard of a hit that hood took. However it did its job well and protected the front sight from damage.

Looks pretty good Daver! I’ve got a cheap win94 I’ve been looking to do something to. Where did you pick up the peeps and fire sight from?

Nice work! Too bad you the wood grain didn't work out; I think the stained grey would have looked great. Pretty impressed with the front sight hood too! I am definitely a fan of having a hooded front sight, it would be a must on my list as well.

I use a 375 Big Bore for what you describe, but I really really want a cheap to feed 3030!!
