Sks rusted after shooting Norinco non corosive ammunition. Anyone experience this?

OK just checked my VZ58 shot a bunch of corrosive thru it then about ten non corrosive to clean out the corrosive. Had left it for about a month with no cleaning. All good no rust

yes it was the norinco non corrosive

Do you really believe that no matter how many rounds you shoot you always clean your rifle only from residue that was left from only one last round? And everything else is magically gone? Again, in dry room from dry weather outdoor your rifle will be fine after a crate of corrosive ammo.

Does anybody know if tracer rounds are more corrosive then the normal corrosive ammo?
Reason I ask is I shot some Chinese green tracer through my vz58 a while back and cleaned my gun like I normally do
Checked the gun a month later and the barrel was rusted heavily but the bolt and gas system was good
I had to keep cleaning the gun barrel every four days for a month straight to get the rust to stop coming back
Never had that happen to me before and all the other guns in the safe were fine

The reason it took so long to clean is that oil does not dissolve salt. All the barrel needed was some water on a patch. I pour some boiling water down the barrel and then clean normally. Easy and fast and 100% effective on salt.

just FYI. I've read somewhere that cheapo Chinese "safes" (like 99% of the market) have some materials inside emitting corrosive chemicals, so for those, using desiccants is a must.

I think they mix in corrosive primers in the new production.

Most of them are indeed non corrosive but for some reason corrosive primers get mixed in. Write to canam and get them to note the lot number maybe we can figure out the bad lot and the good lot

Ive bought this and only shot in my SKS, about 100 rounds. But in saying that I always run / use hot water on the parts and down the barrel.
Then cleaned and out back in the safe.

I will be following this, as I wanted to use in my type 81 when it shows up.
Bought from Canada Ammo last year around this time.

I have contacted Canada anmo already and they have suggested to do a nail test. So that's what I am doing now. I feel like norinco uses corosive primers as well. Quality control seems to be lacking at norinco

I normally shoot surplus corosive ammo and clean it right after i shoot it and have no problems but this time I felt that since I'm shooting non corosive anmo it wouldnt be a bad thing to leave it for a couple weeks until I go to the range again and then clean completely after. I'll let you know the results of the nail test.

I only clean my guns if
-shooting corrosive
-post hunting
-damp weather shooting and thing get damp
-Action is visibly cruddy/dirty
- gun not functioning as well as prior.

Under 100-200rds of commercial ammo and I'm probably not cleaning it.

I have shot corrosive for many years and never had rust issues. Not once.

Just field strip the parts after a shoot, and coat with CLP and wipe down. No need for windex or hot water or any of that non-sense.

This is precisely why I'll never buy any SKS accessories that require removal to field strip (dust cover mounts, etc), as it is a requirement after every range session.

Same here. I just use pure Ballistol for cleaning the SKS/Mosin parts after shooting. No need for any water or even urine:). Never had any problems with rust. Some people are, indeed, fixated on using water in their SKSs.

The ammo I shot through this was supposedly non corosive and I didn't clean it and still rusted.

p
I always run water down the bores. The water neutralizes the corosive salts and then clean using solvents. Then I oil it back up put it in the safe and all good. Just trying to pin down the reason why it rusted so much this time around

Agree.
The scare of corrosive ammo is ridiculous, I would never pay one extra penny for "non corrosive ammo".

If you were shooting at an outdoor range and it was cool out you could have developed moisture from temperature change then stored it. This could have caused the issue whether you were using non corrosive ammo or not.

LOL! You can dump anything you want down your barrel. Just about anything with water in it will work. However, nothing works better than boiling hot water. Nothing is cheaper than boiling hot water.

Here endeth the lesson.
