S&W M&P15 or DPMS Oracle?

Though being retired Army, this is my first venture into the "Black" rifle world privately. My wife(Yes, she is a keeper) wants to buy me a rifle for Christmas. The choice being the S&W M&P15 Sport II and the DPMS Oracle, both being at the same price point. I do plan to run optics due to old eyes. I am not up to doing competition, leaving the bunny hopping to the young guys. Just some plinking with something close my old C8. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

The Sport 2 is the best selling AR in the US for a reason. Cheap, highly effective, runs almost any ammo you might throw at it. As far as it goes for your average AR, there's really no better choice. You can look at some of the reviews. It's almost universally lauded as the best choice for new AR owners or general purpose shooters. If you're not going premium (Colt, Daniel Defense) then the S&W is the best option in my humble view.

Can't comment on the Oracle, but I have a M&P and it has given me zero issues. It only has around 400 rounds thru however. All ammo and mags I've tried have worked flawlessly. I liked it so much I bought one for the wife ( mines a keeper too).

I can't speak for the Oracle but the M&P Sport 2 was my first foray into the "Black" rifle world. Threw on some better furniture and bought a TriggerTech trigger and low and behold I am throwing sending some decent groups down the range. 1000 rounds including a box of every different ammo I can find without a single failure. Upper and lower have a better fit than the guy next to me on the range yesterday and his AR was twice the price. Hap hap happy so far.

Doesn't Tenda have the M&P 15 II for $620 right now?

They are both great rifles for the price. I have the S&W as well, just finished upgrading a few parts and putting her back together. Shooting from a bench using my ammo can as a rest I was getting 1.76 MOA. Now that theres a better buttstock, free float handguard and a bipod, I am curious to see if groups improve. Will find out this weekend :D

And you can always flat top your M&P with a low profile handguard and a trim job on the stock gas block to maintain that factory gas setup.

That flat top on the M&P looks great.

I'm in similar position as OP insofar as what I'm looking for. First AR. The M&P II obviously pops up a lot, but my local gun store suggested the Oracle was a better buy.

I'm leaning towards the M&P if only for the brand name (I also prefer the look slightly over the Oracle), but I'm also toying with the idea of spending a little more money to get something unique - and freefloating, if possible.

For example, ~$1k gets me a FDE Diamondback DB15 with a keymod rail (http://www.bullseyelondon.com/diamo...-fde-flat-dark-earth-db15efde-restricted.html). But I don't see much feedback on here about that one in particular.

Can anyone recommend the DB15? Or any other rifles in that segment and price point? Or should I just dive into the M&P?

Hope that makes sense, any insight is appreciated.
