Good choice for first revolver.

I’m starting to think I will need a revolver in my collection to be able to even call it a collection. Looking for input on make, model, caliber etc.
Let me know what you think.
Budget would be in the range of $500-700.
Used or new either way doesn’t matter to me.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.
 
You didn't specify what type of action you're looking for but as a general suggestion I'd look into a used S&W Model 66.

You might find one for $700.

I went with a 6" 686 no dash for my first revolver. Couldn't be happier. It's so heavy that factory .38 loads feel like .22. Factory .357 kicks a little more, but totally still (easily) manageable with the weight of the L frame and 6" barrel.

That's why I don't like the 686, it's way too heavy, so my preference is the 66.

Generally these threads are pretty useless because until the OP gets to handle all his candidates he'll be no further ahead.
 
I guess it depends on the style your looking for, I'm going to be looking for a Cowboy single action in a 45 for my next gun I
like the uberti cattleman (or at least that style). I'm not a huge fan of the new style revolvers but that's going to to depend on the style you want.

True. But at least I have a starting point of which ones to handle. Besides.....it’s nice to see what others think.
 
A 586 or 686 is nicely balanced in the 4.25 and 5” offerings. They look good and feel right. Maybe switch to an after market Hogue, Custom finger grooved wood or Pachmayr grip.

Failing that, the M19 or M66 in 4.25” is a beautiful handgun....if you can find one.

I find 6” guns a bit nose heavy or the barrel looks too skinny. The only 6” revolver that looks right to me is the M29. The .44 Mag barrel is just thick enough!

This is all personal opinion of course!
 
If you don't already have a .22lr in your collection and looking for a revolver (too) you should consider a S&W 617.....
 
If money is no object than a Manurhin or a Korth should be in the running. These revolvers new is easily $2gs but the best bang for the buck and most under valued (IMO) is the S&W model 10. The last one I picked up was from one of the site sponsors for $250. I bought it sight unseen and was quite surprised when I picked it up because it came with the original box and paperwork and look almost brand new. The bluing on the older S&W's are much more deeper and richer than the new S&Ws.
 
I vote S&W too but... if its a newer gun, I would carefully inspect it for flaws.

Nothing wrong with the new guns, if you look at it first.
