leadpipemike and I spent a little too long at camp on a late season grouse hunt.
When we got back out to the lake it was frozen over. It made it interesting getting a canoe through an inch of ice.

Rigby put up lots of grouse but most were in the thick stuff. We only came home with one this time. We did put a lot of miles on our boots and many more on the dog. He spent the evenings curled up in front of the wood stove.

Looks like fun times, I've had that happen late season duck hunting.
Last 100 yards to shore coming back in was frozen over..... oh well makes it that much more memorable.

Not successfully yet, no. I have been on several amazing hikes packing gear and a rifle and a now unfilled tag, that's about it.

I keep getting told it is what you make it, in my mind hard work demands results. I put in tremendous work with my other hobbies and I get results.

My take on it is, hunting should be no different, and I am going to make it happen sooner or later.

Seems to me that with that much hard work and effort there should be an expectation of equal results, no?

You don't hunt, do you?

The hard work is proportionate to the enjoyment, not the gamebag.

Well said. The enjoyment and camaraderie is the reward. If the gamebag was my motivation I would just go to Fortino's.

As an aside, I was out duck hunting with two friends this past Saturday. Not a single shot taken by the group, but what a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Regardless of if I come home with meat it's always a successful hunt, even if I'm sitting in the dirt and mud of a cutblock in the rain. I love being out in the woods hunting, don't get me wrong though it's even better when you get to come home with meat.

Sometimes too much sweat equity is an indication of not knowing what you're doing. Hunting is about patience, observation and learning as much as possible what's going on around you. If you're just climbing every mountain, fording every stream and racking up the kilometres, you may be missing all the clues the wild can provide if you know how to look for them.

Reminds me of my old elk hunting mentor. "Elk are where you find them, if you keep looking where you think they should be you won't have much luck" lol so true.

Hunting is no different. If you are hunting for an amazing experience, then most hunts will satisfy and are therefore successful.

If success is measured by the amount of meat in the freezer, well, all you need to do is put that tremendous effort into a shopping trip at the local supermarket. Much cheaper, too...
