Boy did he get the surprize of his life when he tried to chase my donkeys........he ended up being the one getting chased. They charged him with a vengeance and chased him right out of the pasture with his tail tucked between his legs.
This all brought me back to the fact I don't have a back door gun set up and sighted in. I was using my 7 RUM 700 CDL but it is blued/wood and it was starting to rust so I cleaned it up and put it back in my vault. After some thought I settled on my 257 Wby which is another CDL but at least it is stainless and fluted and it shoots 1/2" groups with 110 ABs when I do my part. So I got off my ass and took her and my 22-250 up to the bench and got her sighted right on the mark. Last 3 shots made a 1/2" group splitting the center line on the target and nestled right between the 2 and 3" high lines. My 22-250 also shot about the same group and I set her up right on the 2" high line cutting the center line as well. It took some doing but she really likes the Sierra 55 gn HPBT. Had this load for a while but never got around to settling on a scope and getting her hitting the right place on the target............but that's all changed now !!!!
My 243 700 Rem however doesn't seem to want to be consistent, I think I changed stocks along the way so I'll have to give her a bedding job and try it again because it was shooting that load under an inch consistently before.

It's time for a day with my heavies and another with my levers..........so many guns...so little time..........I need to spend a whole day just with my 243s. I have umpteen test loads for 4 of the five and as stated before I need to do some work on my old reliable 700 again. It could be a full time job if I decided to let it get to that level..........Then when I get them all set up with an excellent load the damn powder manufacturers come out with a dozen new powders and I'm back to square one again........picked up 5 lbs of RL 33 a while back, now guess what? I'm reviewing loads I have for my 300 Wby, my 300 RUM, my 7 RUM...........where does it all end..........I'm starting to think like Longwalker..........one generic load for all rifles in a given cartridge.........

Okay, I'll bite - " ....one generic load for all rifles in a given cartridge...". I've taken a few loads directly from John Barsness's article "Handholds that Work" - for example, 58 grains IMR or H4350 with 165 grain bullet in 30-06. In the 30-06 rifles I've used, I have never felt the need to go anywhere else. If this load don't work well, then I'm checking for something wrong with the rifle / scope / mounts. RL 15 and Speer Hotcor 165 grain in every 308 Win I've tried always seems to work well. Barness's load of Ramshot Big Game in 9.3x62 with 286 grain PPU and Nosler Partitions are my latest confirmation of his recommendations, although less than 2 pounds of that left and none seen in last couple years.

Maybe Douglas you need something in a semi auto to make shewt'in real quick.
Maybe a BAR in .270?
Fast like lightn'in.

Dawnkies?
Give up awn them Arrrrrgoes?

Just keep a .22-250 sighted in with winchester white box ammo sighted handy for this reason. Buy it. Sight it in. Don't sell it or screw with it. Check zero twice a year. Done.

Sheesh Doug! We have wolves in the neighbourhood? I guess it had to happen. Wtf was the government thinking when they reintroduced them down south? Wait a minute... government think?? Now I get it.

I'm a relatively new resident here and apparently wolves are becoming a problem. This is the second one I have seen in 3 years of living here full time and 3 years part time. I haven't seen much sign of them so I think we're probably getting the odd wanderer through this area. I wouldn't say they are a problem yet though, as some seem to think.
Having livestock and a relatively large open pasture area I believe I probably see more game and predators than most in the area.
The 257 Bee is all sighted in now and in a handy place, so the next one won't be so lucky...........

We don't have wolves this far east, only what seems to be a domestic dog/coyote hybrid.
My question is, are wolves legally protected in the areas that do have them? I'm not a predator-hugger, just asking the question..

It depends where you are. In Saskatchewan they can be trapped or shot with a Southern fur license. Along the forest fringe (edge of the big-bush) there is a season which basically didn't do anything that couldn't be done with a Southern fur licence but made for "hey look we're doing something news stories" and "This is an outrage news stories" from others that didn't realize that nothing had really changed. In the Northern Conservation block wolves are also trapped and shot but only by the holders of registered traplines. Those guys seldom trap anything and the outdated law in effect protects them from everyone else.

There were areas in Alberta where bounties were being paid, and maybe still are. BC lists it as a BG animal.

A wolf is either a fur bearer, big game animal or pest depending where you are standing at the time.

In BC farmers can shoot them on sight if they are menacing livestock and in the Rocky Mountain Trench below a certain elevation there is no closed season.

I feel it's best to have one all round gun that fits your needs for hunting. Use it,shoot it,and know it no questions whether it's sighted in it's your work horse! Save the others for the range. Good luck with the wolf next time!
