Charges laid in Navan pig shooting

This same hunter would probably mistake your dog for a coyote or a wolf.

That reminds me of the dog walkers dog that got shot near here a few months ago.

Haven't heard of any charges laid, which doesn't surprise me. Nor were there any hunting regulations changes, which is good.

It is pretty sad that these folks lost their pets to such stupidity. I think the "hunters" should get them some new ones.
I do know that this will not replace lost family members, but the couple can make new memories with new pets.

Farmer from B.C is sending them two potbellied piglets, free of course, Air Canada is shipping them free of charge.

This was kicked around in another thread. The shooter was NOT a hunter and he thought he was taking out some wild boar. The swine were running around in an open field and frankly I don't think that anyone who saw them would have been thinking "Oh those are pet Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs." It does seem the shooter did trespass but there can be good reasons for doing that and I would think that the motive of removing a serious agricultural pest that has been spreading across the whole continent is a pretty good one. Buddy even phoned the landowners to notify them, he clearly had no other motive than sparing the county a boar invasion. Unless this turns out to be a cause celebre with PETA and ALF demonstrating outside the courthouse or the magistrate is an anti, he will not face a significant penalty.

Not sure people know or can even imagine what it's like to live outside a city anymore but pet pigs running around loose are not reasonably to be encountered.

Lived in the country all my life, very few country people would mistakenly identify pot bellied pigs as wild boar. Onus is on the shooter to identify his prey and legally follow the rules which he did not, and there is no excuse for trespassing, good intentions or not, in a non life threatening situation . Would you feel as accommodating if he had shot their Newfoundland dog thinking it was a bear? By the way free range pigs are starting to become a very popular niche market for the organic crowd.

Two pigs is hardly a wild boar invasion and a threat to the entire county.

Um-hmmm. Seen a lot of wild boar and pot bellied pigs have you? Free range or otherwise?

You need to get someone to explain to you how ###ual reproduction works. It won't be me though.

No I don't, because these were two domesticated pigs shot by someone who doesn't know better. No wild boar invasion, no threat to the county, just some toothless hillbilly looking to play hero.

I have seen enough to recognise they are not remotely visually similar except they share the same genus, kind of like mistaking a Shetland pony for a thoroughbred, but you seem to be the expert.

"Toothless hillbilly?" If you're in a mental space where you have a hate on for people over pigs, I'm surprised to find you here at all, unless....

Potbellied pigs are actually very clean and quite smart... my father raised them on his farm for a few years. Many of the buyers sent pictures of their potbellied pigs integrated into the family just like a dog or cat would be.

In addition to the criminal charges they should be court ordered to make restitution.

Unfortunately, I don't think they are criminal charges, but FGA charges. I hope the judge gives him the max allowable.

I think snuggling up with a dirty pig is just gross. Hunters did them a favor, IMO. Maybe they'll move on to a more appropriate pet, not breakfast meat.

I hope you're being facetious. Just because you don't like someone's pet doesn't mean they should not be allowed to own them. They didn't keep them in a 26th floor of a bachelor apartment, but had a large pen for them. This guy was an adze hole, and according to one person I talked to (I have no idea if it's true or not) he knew exactly what he was doing.

Can't believe the guy that shot them did not know that wild pigs are not a problem in Navan.. maybe something else behind the story
There have been a few cases of wild boars/feral hogs in Eastern Ontario. IIRC, a 350 pounder was shot near St-Isidore last year, but a domestic pot-bellied pig and a feral hog are night and day. It's also doubtful a feral hog would behave anywhere like a tame pig. I was talking to someone who lives in the area, and they are certain it was not an accident.

Funny thing is If you watch the video in the news article the husband refers to the incident as a accident :/
