I am thinking about getting some new grips for my model 27. It currently wears the factory target grips and they are a handful. I've browsed altmonts website and I like that their classic panel grips are a bit smaller.

Any suggestions? Leave it alone? Get rubber grips? Maybe faux ivory...

As it is now:

Eagle makes a really nice heritage coke bottle grip with the S&W medallion. That would be my choice for a 27 but they are pricey.

Pachmyer rubber grips are the industry standard. They might be hard to find as model 27's are "N" frames.

Not anymore, the last ones I bought were completely unusable after the screw ripped out of the rubber. I have never seen such a poor designed grip in my life, maybe the old ones were better?

It's really too bad because they fit my hands perfectly :(

I had Ahrends Retro Target grip on my Model 28-2 when I owned it. They had the classic look of wood grips but were much better shaped for my smaller hands, especially around the bottom.

If you want the classic look, the eagle heritage grips are worth it imo. If you just want a nice set of wood grips, also take a look at the hogue wood grip for half the price. They fit me very well.

I had the finger groove Pachmyer grips, but I wasn't crazy about them either. I also had the hard plastic Bill Jordan grips, and while quite ugly, they work well for someone with large hands.

I have a pair of Kim's cocobolo Retro Targets on my 625 and they are very nice, alhthough mine don't have the nice colour yours do. He's not fast but he does very good work.

To the OP- that is GORGEOUS! (And Master-G's ain't shabby, either.) I will admit to putting Pachmayr Presentation grips on my Model 19; on that revolver they feel better to me than the factory grips, but there's no question that wood looks way better.

I kept an eye open for grips at the gun show this morning. Only smith grips I found were for j and k frames.

It's ok to bring back an old thread if it's your own right? Right.

I found these grips at a gun show a couple months ago. They are quite worn and a bit chewed up. Costed me a whole 5 dollars. They almost fit, there's about a 1/8" gap at the front grip strap. I found it real easy to shoot one handed with these smaller grips on.

That's that.

They look to be K-Frame Magnas. The Model 28-2 often came with ones sized for the N-Frame—if these work for you maybe place a WTB ad in the EE for a set?

I like to use Pachmayr rubber grips for shooting my S&W wheelguns....

The Ahrends Retro Target grips are nice; I have a set on my 29.

Herrett's Roper style are another option for a slimmer version of the target grip. Be prepared for a wait, though, as they are made to order based on a tracing of your hand.

Compared to either of these, factory target grips feel like 2x4s. I detest finger grooves; they never seem to fit right.

If you use Magna grips, I would highly recommend using a grip adapter (e.g. Pachmayr, Tyler T-grip) with them in order to fill some of the gap behind the trigger guard.

If you want to go the Bubba route, you could try cutting the bottom of the factory grips [maybe you want to find a spare, cheap set]...cut 'em off flush with the bottom of the grip frame.

I did this with a spare set I had, and I found my old Mod.28 worked much better for me. YMMV...
