BC Grizzly Hunts over except for the First Nation people!

East Coast same thing Atlantic Salmon count going down steadily you used to buy your license with 8 tags now its just hook and release but the Injuins are still netting them.

Soooooo the biggest concern here is that they can hunt the bears, not that the government of the day closed down the hunt without disclosing that they had been considering a ban?

Just want to be clear on why we are mad is all.....................

Personally, I'm pissed that it was closed on emotional reasons, not science based decisions for conservation, but hey that's just me....

I promise not to get to emotional when the first snowflake or millennial is brutally attacked in a urban area this spring, with any luck it will be against the law for LEO and CO's to shoot them as well.........

we will now see a general increase the grizzly bear population .be careful out there everybody .

Everything turns on this SCC decision:

R. v. Marshall, [1999] 3 S.C.R. 456

The majority of Supreme Court of Canada justices noted that the right to trade, and implied right to fish, hunt or gather the wildlife to trade was limited. The Treaty guaranteed access to “necessaries”. The majority concluded
that in today’s world, “necessaries” would be equal to securing a moderate livelihood. This means
Mr. Marshall could sell a limited amount of eel to support his family, but could not operate a largescale
commercial business. As Mr. Marshall was selling the eel to support himself and his commonlaw
wife in very limited quantities, his activities fell within the scope of the Treaty right.
Therefore, the majority of the Court acquitted Mr. Marshall on all charges, finding that the Treaty
protected his activities.

I'm not surprised. We knew they didn't care about the science. They only cared about public opinion on the matter. An the public opinion is negative - one poll even had the majority of hunters (58% or something like that) against the hunt.

Furthermore, it WAS a campaign promise. People like to complain about the government not listening to the people, then when they do listen to the people someone else is upset they're not listening to the science... Well you can only have one or the other in many cases...

I feel sorry for the people impacted by this. I'll never get a grizzly skull for my collection, but that's nothing compared to the people who are losing their jobs (guides ect) or some of their best clients (transportation services ect)

Everyone who's thinking that grizzlies will overrun bc though... Less than 300 bears are taken yearly. Considering the population is estimated at 15000, that's a tiny number of bears, certainly not enough to make a noticeable difference in the short term. Also, big old males (the ones trophy hunters specifically target) are a major hazard to cubs, so it's actually possible that numbers will decrease due to increased cub mortality.

I totally agree with you that the numbers could decrease faster than they think! I'm just upset cause I think the time has come to put everything in the past behind us! We cannot be held responcible for what our forfathers have said or done! Lets have a level playing field once and for all! Let the people speak, put it to a vote!

yes..... I'm pissed for the same reasons.
I also think it's a very poor decision to not close it for "everyone" if they are going to close it at all. I am quite vocal in my support of aboriginal right and title but in this case I believe the government is screwing up big time. Decisions like this only serve to cause problems for everyone

When it comes to restricting or closing a harvesting season on a plant, animal or sea life , and it IS actually made for true conservation reasons.... even as an aboriginal person , I believe it should be closed or restricted for all. It goes beyond "rights" when it is done for the sake of conservation.
But this grizzly bear thing.... it's not conservation at all it's just a bunch of dumb people playing politics with our wildlife.

Well said. Nothing to do with conservation or what’s right for the bears or their habitat.
Purely so some snow flakes can hug and claim they “made a difference”

You know, I can think of a lot of things that 78% or some other made up number thinks is socially unacceptable but yet are legal.

Yup, as long as we're fighting amongst ourselves we'll be too busy to stand upto the government.
