What is it? Spruce Grouse? Roughed Grouse? Partridge?

Three of them live near the house. Getting pretty tame.

I get them hanging around and it is nice to see ruffies around the yard ......But........they tend to fly at house windows, with some breaking their necks.
Not all bad though......free lunch when they do!!!!

Here's a couple good spruce grouse pics from August or sept, before the season opened. Lucky for him lol, good looking feller.

That there is the reason I own a .410...... Wish we had more down this way.

Get out and walk my friend, there are plenty of grouse in SW Ontario from Lake Erie up to Georgian Bay. I deer hunt public bush most of the time and I see at least one grouse almost every outing. When I take the dog out for rabbit and grouse it's normal to see a half dozen or more each outing.

I had planned on going out today, but I woke up to see all of the snow has melted.

They have figured out where the sunflower seeds come from. When I'm heading for the feeder, I can usually get within 6 or 8 feet before they walk away.

That's pretty much normal for grouse that aren't in highly pressured areas. A couple hours north of here you can walk within a few feet of them and I have heard tons of stories from family about killing grouse with stones, branches, pellet guns, sling shots etc and are super easy to kill. However, the ones around here tend to take flight when you're about 20-40 yards away because they've likely been shot at a few times.

I used to shoot grouse but cannot do it any more. Feel sorry for the stupid little things.

Never felt the juice was worth the squeeze anyway.

I walk the bushes in this area for 30 years hunting deer
Bird numbers really dropped after the wild turkey numbers started to increase

Hunting them where they are hand fed may reduce the sport lol. Where I hunt they are wiley, usually they either duck their heads and run or fly 100 meters. And their stutter-flap flight pattern makes wing shooting a challenge. Once and a while you get one that is God's gift of instant chicken breast.

Hey SB - yes another member corrected me there. Other than the meat colour, what else would you be looking for identification wise? I ask as yahoo images seems to be lumping ruffed, spruce and blued altogether.

A buddy from Nova Scotia calls them all partridge when in fact the only partridge in Canada is the introduced Hungarian.

And nowhere in the previous 39 posts did I see a blue grouse.
