What 22lr do you like for hunting?

Remmington Thunderbolt every.single.time.

By far the most consistent 22 ammo I've used, works in all my 22's with out fail. Not a huge fan of REM but that thunderbolt #### works

The ammo make or bullet matters less with small game than accurately placing said bullet where it needs to go. You are not busting heavy bone or needing to penetrate deeper tissue to get to vitals like you need to do with large game. Thus shoot what your rifle likes the best. .22's can be finicky on what they like to shoot most accurately. As has already been said, find what yours shoots most accurately and use that.

First time I read "remington thunderbolts" and "consistent" in the same sentence lol

Ive always found solid point more accurate than hollow point. But hollow delivers better punch on running snowshoes and hares.
R.E.M. Yellowjackets
CCI stinger ( have some snap but get more fliers)
Subsonics if you want quiet
Winchester wildcats work well also.

I found any of the exposed lead bullets to foul my barrel way too easy, so I only stick with copper plated. Federal bulk is a no go for me because it's not a true hollow point, just a little dimple on the end with minimal expansion. That being said, I use cci copper plated shorts for anything small with less report. Larger further distance gets mini mags. In a pinch I have used the Winchester bulk with good success, but every box contains a few rounds with no priming compound so practice your stoppage drills.

For anyone interested, there's the Paco Kelly (pacotools) die which forms 22 bullets like the neil waltz listed above, but for about half the price. Paco also has a tool which allows you to cut off the end of the bullet making it flat for smacking small game hard. I plan on ordering a set this winter to play around.

I like my BRNO but for carrying in the truck I just take my JW15a,' Back Packer' with the 13'' barrel, synthetic stock and a Bushnel 4 x scope....quiet 22 shells work just fine and don't make much noise

I hope to see a thread on this when it comes about.

Yes! Thunderbolts.. I love them too. Everyone seems to hate them but that means there's more in-stock for me to buy lol. They function in my marlin 89c perfect. It's exceptionally picky about ammunition. Sub 1" groups at 50 yards and I won't clean the rifle until I've fired 500-1000 rounds.

I use solids for upland. I drill them with body shots. Very little damage. Pretty much only have used my trusty 24H-DL .22/20ga for the last 50 years. I only shoot one or two birds per season, if that many.

Although gophers don't fall under the "hunting" category, I use hollow points when shooting them.

In my limited and recent hunting experience, I used what shot best in my rifles and aimed for the head. For me that ended up being Federal standard velocity 40gr lrn out of my cz 455 lux and CCI 40gr cprn out of my stevens 300f trapper. These seem to do the job on grouse and squirrels. In thick woods the grouse seem to not place the direction of my shot and I can usually get off at least a second shot if I need it.

As a side note, I've noticed in my war against the squirrels on a friends property that they seem to undergo far less vigorous death throes when head shot with round nose compared to hollow points. They also seem to flop more vigorously the greater the velocity of ammo... CCI Stingers being the "floppiest" ammo. Anyone seen this effect before?

He also has/had a die that uniforms the rims for identical ignition shot to shot . Until your post i had no idea he was still in business as i bought from him 20 years ago . His die will swage every bullet to the exact same diameter and uniforms the rim . You can turn almost any ammo into match grade by uniforming it .
