I always like these but I know some people don't.
I recently got a new job. I would like to celebrate by purchasing a rifle. My original intention was to purchase something wildly impractical (big bore ruger no 1 or 458 wm), but I have re-evaluated that because of holes in my safe, besides some 45/70 analogue pistol caliber carbines I have a 7.62x39 cz and .338 WM at the moment.
Here are the criteria-
- spending around 1500 dollars
- bolt action
- in a "practical" but not "vanilla" caliber
- not recoil sensitive but something you can "shoot all day" would be nice too.
- the rifle will be scoped with a decent piece of glass (probably a 1.5-5x leupold or similar), this is not included in my cost estimate
- the rifle will be used to hunt moose and black bear primarily and may see some west coast deer hunting
- I am not a long range game sniper. 300 yards would be a long poke for me, 200 is a definite possibility but short range is much more likely.
- something that fills the hole between 7.62x39 and 338 win mag
- relatively cheap to reload for but a bit of investment in brass is fine
- I like heavy bullets
- I like "carbines"
- a "working rifle", nothing heavy or ornate
- amicable to a used rifle
What would you buy? I have an option in mind but why spoil the fun.
