It's Another "Spend My Money Thread"

You need something on the low end... no vanilla equals 7X57 or 6.5X55... M70 or M77, walnut/blued... or stainless/synthetic if you wear your ballcaps backward. Leupold VX-3 3.5-10X40mm, done.

c-90..........I think you need a Rem Mod 7 FS in 7-08 or a Ruger RSI in 7-08 or even 308, but you said no vanilla cartridges so scratch the 308. I too love my little 350 RM, but they don't really fall between your existing cartridges. I consider the 350 RM superior in killing ability to the 338 WM. Let me ponder this some more and I'll get back to you..............

I like the Ruger RSI idea, beautiful rifles and fills the gap nicely.

Well C-90...........I went through my inventory and came up with a few that meet all your criteria.

1....CZ 550 FS in 6.5X55 It definitely fits all boxes and certainly is a "shoot all day" candidate without being vanilla.

2....CZ 550 FS in 7X64 Most definitely not vanilla and meets all your criteria.

3....Rem Mod 7 FS in 7-08. Same as the CZ 6.5 and one can shoot 175 gn Parts for moose or bear, again a "shoot all day" candidate.

4....Rem Mod 7 FS in 350 RM Certainly not vanilla but shoot all day could be somewhat trying.

5....Rem Mod 7 KS, again in 350 RM. A sweetheart to carry, 20" barrel, Kevlar stock, but again very close to your 338 so not really an in between cartridge.

6....Rem Mod 7 358 Win.....fits all the boxes, this one is blued steel/walnut.

7....Rem Mod 7 in 300 SAUM. This is SS/syn and again fits all the wishes admirably with it's 22" barrel. Think what this one might do with 220 gn Nosler Parts semi sp.

8....Rem 700 Classic in 8X57. Not the least bit vanilla and one helluva cartridge in a modern bolt gun.........checks all the boxes.

9....Zastava full stock in 7X57 20" barrel and a good fit for your stated requirements.

10....Rem 700 Classic in 35 Whelen, pretty close to your 338 but still in between, 22" barrel keeps it fairly short and light.

11....CZ 550 FS in 9.3X62 Not really in between your existing rifles but short light and a real killing machine.

12....I have 2 full stock 308s, one Sako AV and a Ruger RSI. Both check all boxes but of course are not the right flavor, being exceptionally vanilla.

13....Rem Mod 7 in 260. Maybe a tad on the light side cartridge wise, but still with 140 gn bullets an adequate "shoot all day" rifle/cartridge combo for your intended usage.

14....I almost forgot my Mod 70 featherweight (push feed 80s model) in the Macmillan stock in 280 Rem, 22" barrel and light. Another "fits all the boxes" model.

What you need to do C-90 is pop out for a visit and give them all a try on my range. I'm sure you could find something in my racks that fits the bill.

Might consider a 358 Winchester BLR takedown. Not a bolt action but meets the rest of your requirements.

Bullet weights from 158gr to 310gr. Acceptable for use on heavy game at close range appropriately loaded. Has a 20" 1:12 twist barrel. Finely balanced, compact and lightweight plus it stows nicely.

Or a 358 Winchester Ruger M77. Meets all of your requirements except not a carbine with a 22" barrel but likely has a 1:12 twist to handle 310gr bullets. This retailer currently lists 3 in stock -

There is a gorgeous Ruger # 1 in 303 on the EE right now.
It's north of your budget .... But it includes rings

Anyway it doesn't check all your boxes .... But man, what a rifle.

I'd be tempted to buy one of those stainless zastavas in 7x64 and throw it in a wildcat stock.....should meet your budget and you'll have something very sweet, that you don't see every day.

sold!

Hoyt..................my calculator just went up in flames as I was adding up the total...........Is that with the Leupolds on every one and rings or just the rifles?

Freire.......Oh those are just the ones that fit C-90s criteria, there's about 200 more in the vault...........

Some of those are plenty good for me.

C-FBMI thanks for taking the time to craft that response.

I appreciate the range offer, I'm equidistant from Whitehorse and Boswell, when/where are we going shooting? :D

The ones I find really interesting on that list are the 8x57 Remington and the 358 win model 7. Is the second one a factory option?

Slimbo believe it or not, that is the "something I have in mind". Torn between that and a Zastava in 8x57, stoked with 220 grain woodleighs. The user above who posted at the same time as me may be a mind reader...

This thread keeps reminding me I need to play with the 35 whelen, 9.3x62 and .375 H&H...

I have one on the way that kinda fits the bill. A Ruger Compact Magnum in .300RCM with 20" barrel. It's an almost obsolete cartridge that fits somewhere in between the 30-06 and the 300wm and performs fairly well out of the short barrel. Yes, the ammo might be a little harder to find but I don't like vanilla either. Except for real vanilla.

C_90..........that would put you in the Dawson Ck/Ft St John or Prince George areas...........regardless the invite stands. I have no firearms left in the Yukon, they are now all in my vault here in Boswell.
