Photo of legally hunted polar bear draws social media outrage, racist comments

Darrell Voisey says people need to become more informed about the way of life in northern Labrador

By Geoff Bartlett, CBC News Posted: Feb 15, 2018 4:23 PM NT| Last Updated: Feb 15, 2018 4:23 PM NT

Makkovik, Labrador man is amazed at the anger he generated when he hunted a polar bear and posted an advertisement online looking for someone to buy the pelt.

Darrell Voisey has had a licence to hunt polar bear for the last three years, and used a piece of seal meat to lure one this year on the ice near Turnavik Island, just outside of Cape Makkovik.

Voisey proudly brought the carcass back to Makkovik where he said people look forward to seeing a bear whenever it's hunted.

After cutting up the meat and bagging it in his freezer, he decided to post an ad for the 10-foot pelt on the Corner Brook Classifieds Facebook page. For the first few days he got a bit of interest but no buyers.

Then the outrage started.

"People are saying that they're almost extinct and that they shouldn't even be killed and that the people killing them should be strung up or thrown in jail," Voisey told the Corner Brook Morning Show.

"I guess some people just don't know the way that we live up this way."

According to the Federal Department of Environment and Climate Change, the polar bear isn't considered endangered but is a "species of special concern."

Post deleted after racist comments

The comments on Voisey's ad got so bad, and in some cases so racist, that Facebook actually pulled it from the page.

Voisey said the hunt was legal, and all the meat from the bear is used for food. He thinks people from other parts of the province just need to be more informed about the way of life in northern Labrador.

"I guess they don't hear much about things up this way," he said.

The provincial government holds a lottery to distribute polar bear licences to hunters on Labrador's north coast each year.

"It's a part of a lifestyle. Every year people look forward to that," said Voisey.

He did find a buyer for the pelt, making the sale on Wednesday.

After watching the program Angry Inuk I can see how little understanding there is of northern culture.. Keyboard warriors sitting at Starbucks judging those that live off the land have no clue about the north... Millions of Canadians go south but how many have gone to see the north and experience the culture??

Yes most people haven’t been north of 60,have n idea what it’s like. The same thing happens with Africa they try to impose their ideals on cultures that they have no idea about.

First of all nice looking bear. Looks really healthy.
If I had the chance to hunt Polar Bear I would and I wouldn't care about the crap people are posting online.
My opinion is this. Some people just have enough energy to get off there lazy butts and make it to the computer to read Facebook. There not even capable of even shovelling a walkway not alone go out on the land to hunt such great animal.
But. They read one paragraph online and now there experts on the subject about Polar Bears and Global Warming.
But if you take away there computers and cell phone they would get lost going to the corner store to get milk.
Ok Rant over.

OK, now we have a real dilemma, who the hell will Trudeau apologize to for this one.

CBC for posting a story that there is no way they knew it would be so controversial an offend so many of our citizens.

Facebook, who had to pull the posts down because a bunch of their dedicated followers who have no idea WTF goes on in 96% of Canada's landmass were offended.

Our friends, who have no idea WTF goes on in 96% of Canada's landmass, on Facebook who could not convince the world that they decide what is morally right and wrong here in here in Canada.

Corner Brook Classifieds Facebook page for all the racists posts.

Federal Department of Environment and Climate Change for permitting such a thing to happen.

People of northern Labrador who have been living this way of life for thousands of years .

Buyer of the pelt who bought something legally, but will suffer a public stoning on Facebook.

The seal who was used as bait.

The polar bear who life was taken and will be used as food.

Or last but not least Darrell Voisey who applied for a polar bear license draw and received a license to legally hunt the animal in Canada.

Oh my, what a dilemma. And at $10.5 Million per apology this could get expensive fast. But don't worry there's time to decide. Socks, the wife and kids are on a paid vacation exploring India right now. This will have to wait.
