Last Saturday was clear enough where I am to get out and do some 200 yard gong shooting. My son, 14 years old (has his own membership card) decided to come with me to the club. Why? We were shooting my long range (short range) rig.
Ruger Precision Enhanced in 5.56 (hey it's only 200 yards, the 308 seems like over kill no?) topped with a Vortex Viper PST ($1,399) scope.
We were on our last mag of 10 each. He took his shots - he did admirably well landing 8 of the 10, and then stood up. As he turned away from the bench, the rifle (which is totally top heavy with that scope when on a bipod) and a little nudge was enough to send the rifle over, scope first, onto the concrete ground.
The turrets were mashed, but still turned. there were scrapes in the finish. So I re-zeroed the rifle in 3 shots, and the zero wouldn't hold. When I tried to change magnification, it was froze up. The scope was pooched.
SO, off to home. I found the vortex canada website, downloaded the warranty paper, filled it out, packed it up, and put it in the mail. They got the scope tuesday. I haven't been contacted by them nor have I tried to contact them - I simply followed their instructions on the website.
This little thread will chronicle the experience, as it unfolds. Why? They say they have a VIP warranty. They say no matter what, if the scope breaks they will deal with it. My scope broke.
This isn't a flame thread, or a praise thread (not yet anyway, I hope it turns to praise). It's observations from the POV of someone who is doing what is asked of them and seeing what happens.
The facts
Feb 24 - Scope Broken in bizarre gardening accident (kicking up dirt at 200 is gardening of sorts, is it not? Planting 55 grain lead buds?)
Feb 27 - Scope Received (with signature) by Vortex Canada
Mar 1 - notified by Vortex Canada of scope received and processing started. ID issued.
Mar 18 - notified by Vortex Canada of shipment containing my scope. information says it was replaced with same model scope.
Mar 20 - Brand new scope came in the mail - new in box.
The whole process from break to replacement took 25 days - under the promised time limit of 4-6 weeks and the whole process was quite painless.
WTG Vortex Canada. I am not a brand loyal person - but I do believe I can say with 100% certainty that Vortex optics live up their word.
