What is the easiest way to strip this wood?

I recently bought this Remington sportsman 48 for a great deal but I want to redo the wood because it is clearly used.

What would be the cheapest and easiest way to strip this? I plan on coating it in boiled lin seed oil afterwards because its cheap and easy. I tried throwing loonies at it but that did not work....

I don't care enough to make the wood look pristine since I want to use it and if a gun looks too nice it tends to sit in the safe...

Circa 1850 Stripper works well. Stiff nylon brush as suggested, cabinet scrappers or even small laminate samples make pretty good scrapers to remove the heavier goo and then burlap sac material or Nylon scrub pads are also good for getting the finish off.

Paint on the stripper in an even coat with minimal back brushing and just let it sit for a while until it's done it's thing and the finish is bubbling up. I've never tried the citri-strip but the Circa 1850 is definitely an outside or well ventilated job and a mask is not a bad idea either.

Lot's of videos on youtube

just realized that I have some varsol sitting around. Would that work?

Paint thinner is not a stripper.
The stripper works well and you can get a small can, make sure you have a nice brush, some scrubbing pads or burlap and some scrapers and you are good to go. Read the instructions, watch a few videos and go for it.... :)

I don't see any dents in the wood, but if there are some on the other side you can try steaming them out once it's stripped.
I like to use wet rags and a hot airgun.

It probably goes without saying but remove the butt plate and cap on the pistol grip before refinishing....

That stock will look great oiled!

I stripped that horrible plastic stuff Browning puts on their guns with 3M Safest Stripper.

It's user friendly and kind of strange. Looks like and smells like sour milk.

Slather it on, leave overnight, scrub with a pad, rinse and repeat.

Go real easy on scrubbing any checkering.

My Citori turned out great!

Can't go wrong with good old acetone.

Melts everything off and will dry up fast without leaving any residue.

Pretty harsh to use, good respirator and some latex gloves will help.

paintstripper from CTC.
Scrape off the loose varnish.
Light sanding with sandpaper, clean.
Give it 6 to 10 coats of Tung oil applied sparingly by hand.[Let each coat dry 1st.]
[BEAUTIFUL STOCK].

Nice oiled finish as they all should be. Poor old girl really deserves to be re-blued.

I also used this stuff to strip the paint off of a Norc CQ311 lower. Did a pretty decent job of that as well.

The lower turned out to be an anodized pea green color. I liked it so I kept it that way.

For the budget oriented the small free laminate counter top samples make excellent small scrapers.
Obviously not as good as a sharp cabinet scraper on hardwood but for removing the goo you don't need a sharp cabinet scraper..... most people would likely do damage with a sharp cabinet scrapper.... :)

I'll have to give the 3m stuff a try, they generally make quality products and your results and testimony sounds good!
