I'm thinking of buying a .22LR "sniper" type rifle for target practice but don't know what's out there really. Something that is a lot cooler than the same old, same old 22 semi with a scope on it. I shoot handguns now but want to broaden my horizons....and not wanting to spend a fortune doing it. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can always find yourself a Biathlon Basic and built a knock off SV-99

Look at the Remington 541-T.

It is a heavy barrel .22 RF that is very accurate. But it comes in a none "tactical" wood stock........;)

other then that, get a 10/22 and a Butler Creek stock/heavy barrel kit.

I built one like that years ago with a Leupold 3.5 - 10 X 40mm Tactical scope on it. Looked just like a Mini "Sniper rifle".......:D

I have to second skullboy and go with the 541T heavy barrel. I agree that the wooden, albeit beautiful wood grained stock is less tactical looking, The 24 inch barrel makes this rifle look like a scaled down model 700. I am also trying to find an aftermarket stock to make mine look tacticool as well.

I have the MarkII FV in 22lr. The stock flat out sucks, but you get a 21 inch heavy barrel that won't break the bank. Its not as accurate as my 541, but it gets you started. The 541s went out of production in the mid nineties. They are difficult to come by. Dumbest move remington ever made!

I thought Remington had stopped making them, but wasn't entirely sure.

Sucks because I really wanted to pick one of those up.......................

I got one a 541T I love it has a very non tactical wood stock and a semi tactical 12X Leupie on top. Very tactical 7 10 round mags. When you gotta get them in a hurry!:D

I currently train (for Precision Rifle matches) with a CZ 452 Varmint. Gives me the same muscle memory as my Remmy M700 VSF.

Hope this helps,

Barney

Awesome posts folk, thanks. I do want a semi...thinking on buying this from a guy. Modified Ruger 10/22....I love the "heavy" barrels though, would probably have to add that on later! Hoping they are available in Canada somewhere.
Any pros/cons to a purchase like this...say for around $300 ?
