Huglu - Good or Bad?

I drove out to see Huglu's at Prophet River, very nice for the money paid. fit and finish were well above average. I have shot CZ sporting guns which are made by huglu and they were great, i know 2 shooters that have over 50k rounds on theirs and they have never had an issue. The company seems very good to work with and are very flexible with options and things like LH wood, receiver colors.

Thanks everyone for your input …. I guess you all helped me make a decision.

My Huglu arrived and I have to say she is a beauty … The fit and finish is excellent compared to what I am used to …. Remington, H&R, Baikal, etc. …

From looking at the gun, I have nothing to complain about … and I am picky.

If this gun is as durable as it looks good …. I will be happy. I guess only time will tell …

For those that are interested, Prophet River just got a larger shipment of Huglus in:

And here some pictures of the one I got …

Once the snow is gone I will be patterning the gun …. and I will post further impressions of how she handles and shoots.

NICE!!
Clay brought one in from the States for me many years ago, it was a used gun that was ordered from Europe .
Really nice gun , and II shot it quite a bit before selling it , as I had purchased a Pedersoli later on.
I shot ducks and geese with mine as well as a pile of clays!

Uh, stereotypes are helpful in a world where we can't possibly internalize every possible factor and therefore rely on generalizations in order to function. You might purchase a Huglu and win the lottery and have a perfect gun for a reasonable price. Alternatively you may find that while it functions as a decent (especially given the price) option for a low round count shotgunning style. If that is what you are looking for (and you don't exactly clarify your intent in the original post) by all means solicit internet opinions weighted towards that. However, I think that my statement that turkish shotguns provide exactly what you pay for, stands fairly true (even if stereotypical and slightly 'mean').

If only 50,000+ round count Huglu owners are allowed to reply in your thread I suspect it would actually be empty except for your first post.

Either way, I apologize for not apologizing as I think a fair evaluation of the shotgun is that, at least for the current market, turkish shotguns give you exactly what you pay for. I'd bet that long term, given a fair evaluation, you'd be a lot happier with a Remington 870 or something of that ilk until you decide you are in a place where your participation merits a greater investment.

you should not post if you have no practical experience with the shotgun in question.

I myself have been the proud owner of three different huglu shotguns, all side by sides and I've been extremely happy with them all, well made by craftsman that know shotguns , for the money they are amazing...........ask clay at profit river

Cat, do you like the Pedersoli better than the Huglu?
Sorry for the late reply!
yes I much prefer the Pedersoli's grip (POW), the browned barrels, anc the colour case hardening to name s few points .
they both shot equally well however .
In the end I have kept the Pedersoli and hunt with it every fall .
that being said , the CZ Hammer Classic is a good modern hammer Double at a reasonable price and having owned and shot many vintage doubles and modern ones it is right up near the top if s person wants to shoot a hammer gun using steel .:)
BTW I have owned lots of Huglu/CZ's and and shot the jeepers out of all of them with everything from light target loads to steel- NEVER an issue with any of them !

I think that I would prefer the Pedersoli over the Huglu also. Been reading up on the Huglu and personally I am not a big fan of case hardening for aesthetics only, lazer engraving and dyed stocks. I feel that they are trying too hard to be something they are not.

I specifically stated in the thread already that I have practical experience with them... My father in law owns one and it is sitting in my gun safe right now.

I also believe that, "for the money they are amazing..." is a very good summary and exactly in line with what I have been saying in the thread. They likely aren't heirloom pieces, the price is great, they have earned some bad reputation, and they aren't really good or bad. They are Turkish. What those trade offs weigh up to for you is a personal decision, I'm not judging that.

No worries about the late answer. I remember when you got the Petersoli (on another forum) and have been meaning to ask you how you liked it. Thanks for the reply.

Cat, thanks for all your input and sharing your experience ...

I was considering the Pedersoli Bohémienne ... she seems to be a finer gun than the Huglu.... but she is also more than double the price of the Huglu. And for that money I got a Huglu and a Pedersoli ... :d

But that does not mean I have given up on the Pedersoli Bohémienne ..... there is still a future ... right? ;)

Now, I am wondering, ... if one would want to step up from a Pedersoli Bohémienne what else is out there with respect to modern hammer side by sides? And I guess we are talking now about the range of CAD $2000.- to lets say $5000.-

F.A.I.R makes the Iside Vintage, a modern sxs hammer gun. Bilozir has one (or at least did have one) in 20 gauge and I expect he'll have it for a while. F.A.I.R. makes a good product and it seems to me it was priced around $3K.

There is a HUGE difference in price between the CZ Hammer Classic and The Pedersoli and the FAIR hammer doubles.
That and the FAIR is not available inn 12 gauge as well, but the FAIR is a fantastic shooting shotgun
I know this because I have owned all three and still own and shoot the Pedersoli La Bohemianne and the FAIR Iside Vintage and my buddy shoots one as well.
We were so taken by the Pedersoli that we asked to have 20's built but even though they declined, Will Bilozir asked Luca Rizziinii if FAIR would consider it and he delivered in spades!
I am actually surprised that Will still has thee third one that he brought in, .
