Help me chose my GF’s first hunting rifle

Hello there.

So the GF wants to come hunting with me this year (deer, maybe moose).

We are undecided. She’s not a big lady, and the most she can bear, recoil-wise, is my Sako A7 in .270. Ideally, I’d buy her the exact same gun, but I don’t think we’ll be able to save $1700 until November, when the season opens.

So what say you?

Our requirements are:

1) No brands with recent history of QC issues (Remington, Savage etc);

2) Under $1300, including modest glass;

3) Calibers between 7.69x39 and .270 (including 30-30, .243, 7mm08, .308 etc);

4) Lighter is better.

So far I’ve found the CZ 527 and some Tikka T3s (so many models I can’t even begin listing).

Does anything else fit the bill?

Thanks in advance,

Steyn

One of my Vanguards is a youth model in 7-08 that I picked up at WSS when they were blowing them out. It's a great little rifle with the short barrel and short length of pull. It's a nice light, compact rig. I like the 3-position safety on it as well.
Weatherby has a number of smaller compact rifles specifically for women hunters these days. Check them out.

There has been plenty of cartridges suggested for "beginner or youth" hunters over the years, but presently I can think of none better than the 6.5 Grendel. It ticks all the boxes for the proper balance of low recoil, power and ballistics. The soone some major manufacturer wakes up and starts chambering this cartridge in one of their "youth" rifles the better.

I think Ruger is making a full sized American rifle in 6.5 Gren at this time.

The drawback is that you won't find ammo at Bobs Gas Station/Hardware/Sporting Goods in East Bumf@ck, but then again you won't find anything more exotic than a 300WSM there, anyway. ;)

I'd say go vanguard youth 308 with a VX2 2-7 x33. ...this combo will do fine for most game in canada!

Tikka T3 is very very close to the same weight and balance, as your A7 look for a used one on EE or the sponsoring dealers.

The cheaper options being suggested will almost always be heavier.

Fit balance and weight are her considerations, the rifle needs to fit her.

I have to say Vanguard in 25-06. I have killed 2 bull moose over the years and about 15 caribou with one. Now that I think about it, I also killed a big sow blackie with it about 10 years ago. Used a 117gr regular interlock for the bear and caribou and a 100gr TSX for those moose. Nothing went farther than 5 feet. Recoil is so negligible that a small woman could focus on her marksmanship rather than recoil.

Depends on the size of the girl. They often have long slender proportions and youth models don't fit many.

OP, you'll have to take her into the gun store and see what fits. Let her decide what she likes. As for caliber, if she can shoot your 270 then you've got plenty of options, everything from a 243 to a 308 would work. Consider ammo availability - you'll find 270 and 308 everywhere, 7mm08 is less common and stuff like 260 remington even less so.

"...She’s not a big lady, and the most she can bear, recoil-wise, is my Sako A7 in .270 ..."

If .270Win's recoil is the most she can bear, get something with less recoil. 7mm-08.

Weight absorbs some recoil. Don't get the heaviest rifle she can carry, but here's a case for a short-action because at equal weight, the shorter package will be a little bit easier to handle, less tiring to carry.

Regardless of your concern about certain manufacturer's "recent quality issues" (bear in mind that they didn't have those issues until they had them, so they were just like the other manufacturers up to that point, and how do you know one of the others hasn't got some defective rifles out in a gun shop somewhere waiting for your girlfriend? - thoroughly examine the rifle you are buying, no matter who made it) choose a rifle that fits her well. If it doesn't feel right to her, she won't shoot it as well as it can be shot.

Savage with what ever cal you like or
go to tradeex for a Husqvarna

Wood stock so you could trim it to youth/ lady size
Used Husqvarna 1600 series in 30-06 add a scope of your choice

Very good rifles for the money if you do not want to expensive up grades

a T3 .270 with a 150gr projie is enough recoil off a bench or steady rest for all I care, my Lighter Montana 7mm08 doesn't kick as sharply with 140grains an I thank the 7-10 grains less of powder for doin dat.

the 7mm-08 is THE LADies rifle.
