So there's this brand new 686-6 which I recently took to the range for the first time. After couple rounds, I noticed the grip is a bit loose and wobbly.
Got home eventually, and took the rubber grips off. I was stunned to see that the stock pin, that would go through the center of the lower stud of the butt and which helps hold the 2-piece grip well together, was completely missing! Has the quality control of the S&W gone *that* down; anyone experienced this lately?

That said, any idea where I could get that little thing, as a factory replacement part? I see on Midwayusa website, but they don't seem to want to deliver to Canada... Trying to get hold of S&W customer service, but not much success with them so far.

That is utter and complete BS.....I'd contact MD Charlton....they might even have that piece in stock....they are SW Warranty center for canada

IT is just a roll pin you can get it a nut and bolt supply or auto parts store you will most likely have to cut the length to fit,

Brand new gun shouldn't need to run out to the hardware store to fix.

OP, contact MC as Warzaw mentioned. If they won't help, call the retailer and let them know. If they are worth their salt, they'll make things right.

Yeah S&W is crap for quality control, It's 50/50 with you get a great one or a sub par.

I always take my time to inspect them before buying one. It's sad because they are one of the best designed revolvers out there and greed is giving them a bad name.

Well, to add insult to the injury, got a stupefying reply from Murray to send over the entire thing. The revolver. For them to service. Instead of just sending that pesky $2-$3 metal pin...
Lots of money (even though not mine), and time (not having the revolver and waiting for my turn in line of other repairs) and hassle, instead of being reasonable.

Likely to hit some hardware store or something as someone suggested, and call it absolute last time to purchase a S&W (the other one, new M&P, needed adjustment to off-centered front sight). S-a-d.

Numrich will send to Canada. If you plan on taking it apart, might as well buy a couple of bolt plungers and springs too (part numbers 297270J and 297290A). Shipping is more expensive than the part so you might as well get a few more items that tend to go missing during disassembly (trust me on that one).

cheers,

As requested. Measured mine and it is the following dimensions:

Diameter 1/8"
Length 7/16"

As luck would have it, the diameter is exactly the same as a dremel bit (fat one). In fact, identical in both size and material (except length of course). Got a few worn out bits you are welcome to. I'll even cut it to length.

cheers,

So, if something else is wrong with this gun that isn't readily apparent, but which would have been found if it had been sent in, that's OK with you, right? If the gun was subject to poor QC, why wouldn't you want it checked out from end to end?

OP said he already shot it fine, just the grip panels were wobbly. Don't see no reason to have to pay $40 to ship it and possibly $40. return delivery for a $2. pin. The sad thing about buying a gun in Canada, sight unseen, is that one should assume it's final sale with no warranty.

@Northern Amateur: thanks a bunch for doing those measurements. Seems like this pin is part 070220000 from the S&W parts catalogue. If I can't get a quick hold of original replacement part, I might bug you with a PM to get one of those you have. :)

@enefgee: you do have a point there. Well, I just used my own common sense approach on this one: first, the peacemaker seemed to work perfectly otherwise during those few shots; no telltale sign of any other issue. Second, if I were a gunsmith, with many others in line with more serious issues than a missing pin from an otherwise fine-working assembly, would I take apart everything to see what else is missing? Probably not, just like when you go to to the average car mechanic for a specific issue he wouldn't go much beyond fixing it.
That said, the likelihood of something else also being an issue is so slim, the hassle outweighs far and above the benefits of sending the whole thing over in the sense that *maybe* someone would do some extra inspection and all that.

and $14 shipping (just ordered a smaller part from Numrich). However, this is a roll pin and not a solid pin like mine. That being said I cannot attest to the actual size required for your firearm. Trial and error I suppose

Quick final update on the story: managed to persuade Murray to send me the replacement part(for free, due to warranty), by talking to one of their smiths(Tim) about sending the whole thing to them vs them just sending me the pin for the firearm that seems to otherwise work fine. Helpful, responsive guy.
Just got the pin the other day, and all is good!

I also had pretty bad QC issues with a new S&W 617 this year. Thankfully I ran a patch through the bore before taking it to the range (which I always do) otherwise I wouldn't have noticed this. The vendor who is also a CGN sponsor exchanged the revolver without question for a new replacement. It was only replaced by the LGS because it was unshot otherwise it would have gone through the warranty process. They just don't make them like they used to.
