I'm looking to get some noise-cancelling electronic hearing protection while hunting. I was wondering if you guys recommend the ear muff style Howard Lights or the soft silicon in ear style models.

I use the ear muff style. They are fail safe. So if the battery craps out. They are just ordinary ear defenders. They also have a plug on them so you can plug in a radio for party hunting. I like the adjustable volume. With fresh batteries and the volume cranked you can hear a chipmunk take a piss at 100 yards.

LMAO

I was personally thinking of picking 3M PELTOR TEP-100 Tactical Digital Earplug up but they are pricey.

Can you tell what direction a sound comes from with the Howards?

I don't use ear pro when hunting for situational awareness reasons, but I've considered it a few times...

They have independent mics and speakers in each ear, your spatial awareness is the same as if you weren't using them. The difference being that you can turn them up and hear even more than you could with nothing on. Occasionally when I'm shooting rifle outdoors, I'll actually hear the bullet travelling downrange after they muffle the bang. Sort of a hissing sound. Caught me off guard the first few times, as it's not something you'd ever hear without the electronic muffs.

They are a little annoying when there's a mosquito buzzing around your head though. Sounds like super mosquito, haha.

Edit: Make sure whichever ones you get have a foam cover over the mic. I've talked to people that have models that don't come with that, and the wind noise is very annoying. Incidentally, the Howard Leight Impact Sports do have them.

You sure can, you can hear a chipmunk fart with HL and the volume turned up to high. I have some hearing loss from when I was a younger and the howard leights are a god send for me, wether hunting or at the range. It’s was funny last year I was quietly walking through the woods and I thought I was making a racket with every step I took, I removed my ear pro and kept walking and it was obvious I wasn’t making much noise. They really do work well, I don’t hunt without them.

That’s my only complaint about mine. They have hard plastic covers over the microphones and if your in an open area that’s real windy. It’s irritating.

Edit: they are walker razors.

Howard Leight Impact Pro

Love 'em! Some mic noise if the wind is really high, but overall very good units. Batteries last a long time and they are comfortable.

Honestly wish I had got them years ago. The combination of being able to hear better than normal, but still having excellent protection and spacial awareness is priceless.

$85 bucks new on Amazon dot ca.

So... especially for the members from QC... the conservation officer at my hunting course was very specific that electronic aids are not to be used during hunting - this specifically includes electronic earmuffs.

Comments?

I love my Walker ls Alpha 360 muffs. They are awesome at cancelling sounds such as gun shots, and great at amplifying everything else. I dont turkey hunt without them. You can hear the birds walking toward you from a ways out. I’ve also now got into the habit of using them on my watefowl hunts. Great for protecting the ears while still being able to hear the whistling wing beats at first light.

Currently half price at Cabela’s. https://www.cabelas.ca/product/71461/walkers-game-ear-alpha-360-muff
