AK-74s in Canada

You could always drop like $500 cad and get a REALLY NICE AK 74 airsoft gun. I certainly plan to do that at some point

I remember one of the old “Cold War” shoots I attended with my SAFN49 back in 2002 or so at the SPFG Range in Alberta, there was a dude there with an AK74, and I think (if my memory serves me well) that he even was kitted out in Surplus Rusky gear too!

Those were fun shoots when guys would still bring out their FN-FAL, AK, etc and we would “run and gun”.... I missed out on shooting a fellow Range members CA StG44 by a week when he got the fax that he was no longer allowed to bring the StG to the range anymore due to “public safety”.... I even bought 100 rounds of kurz ammo at like $1 a round for it, just so we could have some fun.... :(

I'm sure he has shot it many times.....hes an rcmp officer....like anyone will question him

No, he probably hasn't.

I believe him and have no reason to believe he's broken the law even if he has managed to get access to some 5.45 ammo. He was a rank-and-file Mountie (retired now). It does not mean he got any free passes under the FA or CC regulations.

Nope, as an RCMP officer he can still shoot it, they refer to as a "weapon familiarization" session.

Yes, it was I that ran the Cold War shoot, and was dressed as the big bad russkie☺ IIRC, I had a Norco AK made up to look like a '74.

I'd love to do another one...but we'd have to do it far from prying eyes d/t having the nerve to use our own legally bought and paid for property against the LPoC's wishes.
RECAP: for those who are unaware, the gov't no longer issues transport/use permits for all prohib long rifles--even though the provision to do so is there. A very vindictive move by LPoC, Heidi and Wendy......it has been so since 2006-7 .
Some owners themselves still aren't aware.

I'd be curious to know what penalty there us for this particular "paper" crime--particularly when we/I triedto comply with the regulations, but were denied with no valid reason other than their (govt) interpretation that giving a permit (SAP) for that purpose (shooting) "isn't" in the regulation (but had been given prior to 2006). The height of arbitrary law making....

Awesome!

Thanks for those shoots, they were lots of fun! That was of course back in the day when I was 18-20 and had time to do shoots.. Now with work and kids and life in general, tough to get away... but, I’ve been stockpiling milsurps and ammo for myself and my boys to go to shoots again when everyone is old enough! :)

The Firearms Act (now) explicitly says the CFO may not issue a ATT for a prohibited firearm except 12.6 for the use of target shooting. They may still issue ATT's for the other 4 legally named activities in section 19 (b), moving, transport to a peace officer for registration/disposal, a gun show or for a sale, repair, storage.

Transporting and using prohibited firearms or restricted firearms
19 (1) An individual who holds a licence authorizing the individual to possess prohibited firearms or restricted firearms may be authorized to transport a particular prohibited firearm or restricted firearm between two or more specified places for any good and sufficient reason, including, without restricting the generality of the foregoing,

(a) for use in target practice, or a target shooting competition, under specified conditions or under the auspices of a shooting club or shooting range that is approved under section 29;

(a.1) to provide instructions in the use of firearms as part of a restricted firearms safety course that is approved by the federal Minister; or

(b) if the individual

(i) changes residence,

(ii) wishes to transport the firearm to a peace officer, firearms officer or chief firearms officer for registration or disposal in accordance with this Act or Part III of the Criminal Code,

(iii) wishes to transport the firearm for repair, storage, sale, exportation or appraisal, or

(iv) wishes to transport the firearm to a gun show.

Marginal note:Target practice or competition
(1.1) In the case of an authorization to transport issued for a reason referred to in paragraph (1)(a) within the province where the holder of the authorization resides, the specified places must include all shooting clubs and shooting ranges that are approved under section 29 and that are located in that province.

Marginal note:Exception for prohibited firearms other than prohibited handguns
(2) Despite subsection (1), an individual must not be authorized to transport a prohibited firearm, other than a handgun referred to in subsection 12(6.1), between specified places except for the purposes referred to in paragraph (1)(b).

Not really sure when they snuck that in.

Yes
A "cheapshot" regulation if there ever was one.....perhaps one of our esteemed shooting orgs has a test case set up, although I have a feeling that we've been left to our fate.

Still, I've been toying with that idea--but would have to wait for certain family members to pass on before endangering the retirement fund on such a venture. I will not risk $$ that is not completely mine....

I would "crowdfund" a challenge designed to get our 12(x) long-guns legally back on ranges to the tune of $500 to start. That presumes the retention of a knowlegable firerarms lawyer and other such assurances, but nothing onerous for a legitimate test-case. We might stand our best chance post-C71 coming into force, when the direct question can be asked of a judge "Why is it OK to transport a prohib CZ858 or Swissarms, but not a 12(3), (4), or (5) long-gun that is for all intents and purposes, identical.?!?". Just thinking out loud....

If there is an upside to C71, this is it.
