280 Ross

A friend finally got his 280 Ross CH4d dies and brought the rifle and his first two test batches of loads to the range last night.

Asked if I wanted to try it.
After a long hesitation of 0.005 seconds, I said sure.

Nice indeed. Makes the .303 seem like a friendly pussy cat.

He is missing the removable rear bridge aperture sight in case anyone have a lead to one.

Is he using proper 7m/m bullets? Woodleigh make a correct .287" 160 grain bullet. Tradeex carry them. I used to load for the .280 Ross. I formed brass from .300H&H.

Don't want to be an idiot about this, but every 280 Ross round I have (including a full box of very old KNM for Gibbs London) has a .284 slug.

The only .287 I have encountered is a single round of .28 Ross, made on contract by Eley. This was the exerimental which led to the .280. It is on a semi-rimmed '06 casing which was stretched a quarter-inch. Two or three rifles were built...... ammo is sorta scarce. But that's the only one.

From a practical point of view, with the quick powders they were using and those high pressures, I would think a flatbase .284 should work okay in the .280...... and a lot cheaper.

Somebody please stomp on me if appropriate. I don't have a .280 to play with and certainly can't afford one!

I agree Smellie, i have some original 280 Ross ammo and bullet measure .285 and the same with some English ammo
I have slugged a few barrels and found them to be .285 also but have never taken the time to shoot any of the Ross rifles i have

I was given 20rds of original ammo in a ziplok bag. They all had split necks so the bullet's were easy to remove. Powder in some flowed freely while other's were a solid mass.
They all had the original primer. I still have them here somewhere if someone need's measurements

I used to have 2 original rounds of 280 Ross on the shelf till one day a friend came over with a 280 Ross.

He said "if you have ammo to feed it, you can shoot it."

So I grabbed both rounds from the collection and shot them. Amazing cartridge!!

Well i hppen to owne a 280 ross as well that as an excellent barrell and i reloaded for it with .284 bullets and the results were far from good.the 287 woodleigh bullets produced better results but still not that great,im thinking .289 and it would do much better.

My .280 Ross much prefers the Hornady .284" bullet over the .287" Woodleigh. I was disappointed to find the groups went from sub 2'' at 100 yd with .284" to about 6" with the Woodleighs. The barrel was smoking hot after 3 rd.
I have formed brass from .300 H&H as well as .375 Ruger.

When I had my .280, I machined a bumping die to bump Sierra .284 bullets up to .287. It worked, but in the end I started using .284 Nosler partitions, which worked just as well in my rifle.

I have a couple of M10’s. Both purchased from fellow gunnutz. I did a bit of a range report and posted it on the Ross rifle forum. Pics were on photobucket so no longer work.
Using the same load with newly fire formed from 300H+H brass and the 175 gr RN Hornady, one rifle gave a poor (4inch) group at 50 yards and the other rifle key holed all shots. The rifle that keyholes with the Hornady 175’s works better with the 160 gr 287 Woodleigh bullets.
I am sure that a scope or good peep sight would help with tightening the groups. All of my Mklll rifles with original battle sights will produce much tighter groups at 100 yards than either of the M10’s at 50. For now, I will blame the lack of accuracy from the M10’s on my shooting, on the leaf sights and not enough load development. I have lots of work to do before Imwill take either of the M10’s hunting.

All of my Mklll rifles with original battle sights will produce much tighter groups at 100 yards than either of the M10’s at 50. For now, I will blame the lack of accuracy from the M10’s on my shooting, on the leaf sights and not enough load development. I have lots of work to do before Imwill take either of the M10’s hunting.

My rifle came equipped with a Porter peep and I can say it definitely makes shooting good groups easier.
I would love to have a scope on this rifle but I'm not about to D&T it!

I have some original ammunition (never to be fired) for reference.
As well as some old Kynoch rounds.


A slug through the Halger's bore, reads .287".
The Halger bullets give .287".
The Kynoch bullets are .287" also.

Your readings are accurate.

My measurements of .287" were below the crimp groove.
Above the groove they read .286"
I used a bullet pulled using a kinetic puller.
The only Kynoch ammo I have is the 180 Gr. round nose hollow point.
The rounds you have may be different.
