Doesn’t seem to be hay big of a 17 hornet following here or am I wrong? I sense there’s only a small group of guys who are actually into the 17 hornet caliber

I've owned a CZ 527 American for about 4 years now. I really like the rifle and cartridge, but don't reach for it often. I have been shooting 20gr Vmax & 25gr HP with IMR 4227 & AA1680, haven't done a real in-depth load workup yet. Using Redding Type S bushing neck die set and a Lee factory crimp die

I had two. A CZ Varmint and a Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter. Believe it or not sold the CZ and kept the Savage. If I can find an American I might pick that up.

Anyway it’s my primary early season gopher gun. Went through 400 rounds this spring. I put it away for a while when the young ones are out. Use 17 HM2 for them.

I use mostly 1680 and 20 VMax.

Where are you shooting gophers? Close to Brandon? I live in southern Manitoba. 3 hours frI’m Brandon mb. I have no gophers out here to shoot at

I've owned a cz 527 American and currently own a 527 varmint. I find both guns lighter than advertised. The American was very light great for walking. Not that great for trying to hold steady. The varmint is more stable due to the extra weight. And still not too heavy for a walk as long as you don't over scope it.

In a gopher patch it's just incredible. 20 gr v max and a1680. 3650 fps. Every time you pull the trigger the gun doesn't move and you can see pieces of gopher go 5 feet in the air.

As far as powder goes I have only tried a1680. Lil gun is to be watched carefully as it supposedly builds pressure very fast and few others can give the speed these 2 provide.

Bullet wise I have tried the nosler 20 gr hp and tipped version and the 20 gr vmax. Like most guns mine shot best with the 20 gr nosler hp and 20 gr vmax. I bought the hollow points for some coyote calling, not sure if the little hornet will ever make it that far. The plastic tipped stuff has a better bc and are incredibly explosive when they hit small varmints.

My only complaint is it is much louder than I expected.

I’m a huge fan of the 17 Hornet. I reload by the thousands (pails full).
Between a couple buddies, we load for 3 Savage model 25’s.

I developed a load a few years ago that works fabulous! Using H322, 20 or preferably 25gr
V-max’s and CCI small rifle Magnum primers.

What would you like to know? Its a little “Firecracker” :)

I don't own a Hornet but I almost did. I had a good run at work a few years ago and when I got home I mentioned to a friend I was thinking about a Hornet. He talked me into buying his Cooper in 218 Bee. So I still have an interest in the small rimmed cartridges.

How quick are you able to reload for this little round? I would need a single stage press to reload and al the other reload stuff that’s needed

I never really paid much attention to time. I have a Lee Turret press that I use as a single stage press so switching dies takes seconds. I have a powder measure that will throw a charge onto a pan and then I trickle more powder into the pan until the scale says I have my load. With these small cases, I want to be exact on the charge. Placing a bullet onto the case and seating it can be tricky with these banana fingers of mine.

Reloading is a pleasure for me. I live alone, TV bores me, making up some accurate cartridges is a good thing.

I load for the Hornet, but have to start over since I ended up with a bunch of the old crappy brass. I just got 400 pieces of the newer stuff and it is a different weight. I used 1680 before and have some CFE BLK to try with the 20 grain Vmax.

I shoot gophers in some friends pastures around Manitou and Snowflake. I have a 1/4 mile driveway that has a small quantity I let breed for quick entertainment and feeding my cats lol.

You guys t weighing brass with the powder charge to make sure you didn’t double load eh? Is that y the weight differences r so bad? I haven’t reloaded in 5 years or so

No chance of a double load with a1680.

Brass batch averages vary from lot to lot. This goes for pretty much any brass. Never a good idea to mix lots but if they weight the same probably wouldn't matter. I've seen the same brand but 2 different lots bought within a year of each other have a different average weight by over 10 gr. In a small case like the hornet this matters. Throw in different headstamps and things can get real wacky. Buy from the same lot and keep them separate

Ya another guy from Australia told me over fb that he gave up with the Hornady brass. Only uses s&b brass which I cannot get here anyhow. Looking like ma new rifles gonna have to go. 223 rem doesn’t have these issues with brass like the hornet obviously does
