First Gun Purchase coming up, looking for some support through experience. I personally have seen some awesome shots from the 308 but I am torn in two directions with conflicting advice. Any and all help would be awesome. What are your thoughts?

.308 is what I would get, but the .270 Win isn't called 'the poor man's magnum' for no reason.

my brother dropped many black bear , deer and a moose with a 120g pill from his T/C Encore in .270 Win. :)

270 kicks but over the 308 everywhere, period. Even when heavy bullets are compared.

.277, 150g SD 279, max velocity 28 - 2900 FPS
.308, 150g SD 211, Max Velocity 28 - 2900 FPS
.308 lost on Sectional Density

.277, 160g SD 298, max velocity 27 - 2800 FPS.
.308, 180g SD 271, max velocity 25 - 2600 FPS.
.308 lost on Velocity and Sectional Density.
It only gets worse.

I have three 270's but never use them, mainly grab a 308. Most of the 270 factory ammo I checked were very slow. The four 308's I have shoot the same ammo to the same accuracy even with 1/10, 1/11, 1/12 and 1/13 twist, get good performance even with 20" barrels. We prefer shorter barrels because of the suppressors we use for hunting.

I find both rounds a bit boring but I've shot lots of game with and have seen many more game killed effectively with the 270 Winchester. The 308 is just as effective a killer as the 270 but it's kind of ... meh, who cares?
If the only choices are these two then the 270 gets my vote.

I own .308 20" 10twist and hit pretty tight groups at 300m. Don't have a 270, but was making the same decision you are not too long ago.

I decided not to go with more kick in my first rifle, just so I could shoot more in a day and work on my form. Can always sell on CGN forum and change platform later if decide it is not enough.

Can't tell you what to decide, just share how I made my decision.

Hunters are often an interesting and funny lot.

A sizeable percentage of them change their rifles, cartridges and even calibers almost as much as women do shoes and purses. That's not meant to be an insult, but it has a lot of truth to it. Searching for the better machine I guess.

The thing I find really interesting and educational about observing the rifle hunter types and their obsessions/experimentations is there's so much to learn from the different things they try. I dig it all.

But at the end of the day, a .308 is all you really need in most cases because it works. It will always fill that roll. It's the basic hammer of the hunter rifle choices for a reason. I don't find the basic hammer in my shed boring. It's a well designed useful tool.

I have no desire to own a 280AI or a .219 Donaldson Wasp but I sure love reading about guys pushing the limits with em.

Buy a .308, go from there.

I see that you're from Alberta,so,I'm not sure if you have caliber restrictions like we do here in Ontario where the lower 1/5 of the province only allows rifles of .275 (.270Win) or less for all small game hunting due to population density issues. Calibers larger than that are allowed for all hunting in northern areas. For that reason,varmint/predator hunters use the smaller calibers with "frangible" bullets to hunt all year. Loaded a bit heavier (150gr PSP),they can be used for every big game species we have, but, most hunters also use .308Win and up. My suggestion is to buy both.
