308 Winchester or 270?

Although the 270 is a great cartridge I have a hard time actually buying one.
The only one I own was given to me.

It won;t really make a difference to the game you shoot which one you use and both will kill stuff further away than most people should be shooting, so pick the one you find most appealing for other reasons. Both kill stuff when the bullet lands in the right spot.

270. Much more than a deer rifle.
90-120gr for varmints
130-140gr for open areas.
150gr for Elk, etc

Dead is dead. It's what ever you feel comfortable shooting and can shoot proficiently.

.308 for the versatility. Better selection of bullets. Short action means same gun in 270 or 308, the .308 is lighter. I have owned several 270's over the years, but now use .308 for the brunt of my hunting. (When I dont take out the .375 Ruger!!)

I own a bunch of rifle chambered in different cartridges including .308 and .270. If I had to pick one do-it all rifle it would be a 30-06.

Flip a coin and you won’t be disappointed.
I’m a .270win man myself. Love the cartridge to death. Deer, moose elk....
the .308 will do the same.

I own both. I've recently discovered my .308 will launch a 125gr bullet at 3100fps - pretty much duplicating the.270 to 400yd.

Not only is .308 a short action, but it utilizes barrel length more efficiently than a .270. My .308 has an 18.5" barrel. I don't think the .270 is suited to any less than 24".

Beyond 400yd, the .270 has the edge. However, with a standard 1:10 twist it struggles to stabilize bullets with a G1 over ~.525... at that point you might as well go .280 or .260 or something in the 6.5mm or 7mm family.

Right between the .308 and .270 is the 7x57. Goldilocks, though all are good choices.

For hunting applications, the .270 shoots a bit flatter.

For target shooting, the .308 is supposed to be more intrinsicly accurate .... and brass and target bullets more plentiful .....

Im more partial to the .270, but thats brought on by caliber restrictions in my area.

270s are very popular in Ont. for that very reason. I grew up in Fergus and know lots of guys that used them w/o any issues at all.

There's really no reason to pick one over the other. I'd choose the gun I liked best not based on chambering.
